San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper, center, warms up on the court with his teammates before the start of Game 1 of a first-round NBA playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers at Frost Bank Center, Sunday, April 19, 2026, in San Antonio.

Spurs rookie guard Dylan Harper gave a thumbs up to playing against Portland in the first round of the playoffs with his left thumb on his shooting hand in a protective wrap.

Harper jammed the thumb with 3:04 left in the third quarter of the regular season finale last Sunday against Denver while defending Zeke Nnaji on a drive for a score that gave the Nuggets a 13-point lead en route to their 128-118 win.

Harper checked out of the game for good about 30 seconds later.

Despite the injury, Harper received the green light from the medical staff to play in Game 1 of the best-of-seven Western Conference series on Sunday night after fully participating in all three practices last week.

“Rested it for a little bit, got back, felt fine,” he said at shootaround. “Felt like myself, so it’s all good. … The wrap shouldn’t affect me. I think that it’s more of a mental game, a mind game and just not trying to feed into that.”

Harper, 20, is no stranger to thumb injuries after suffering a partial tear of the collateral ligament in his left thumb during an offseason workout at the Spurs’ practice facility. He underwent surgery two days later, which forced him to miss the first two games of the preseason as a precautionary measure.

Harper was asked if his latest thumb injury has forced him to alter his shooting mechanics.

“I’m just not really trying to think about it,” he said. “It’s just basketball at the end of the day. If I’m on the floor then I’m healthy. I’m just going to go out there and play my game.”

Harper famously predicted at his introductory news conference last summer after the Spurs selected him second overall in the 2025 NBA Draft that the club would end its six-year playoff drought this season.

“This is a dream come true, so I’m very excited,” he said. “Probably won’t take my pre-game nap. That’s how excited I am.”

Harper, who averaged 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists over 69 games, said he received some playoff advice from his father, five-time NBA champion Ron Harper.

“He said to take it one game at a time and just to play with the same intensity I’ve been playing with, don’t change anything that you did in the regular season and just be you,” Harper said.

Johnson as relaxed before playoff debut: Spurs forward Keldon Johnson didn’t show any signs of nerves before Game 1 of the team’s first-round playoff series against Portland.

“I’m going to go to sleep,” he said after shootaround Sunday morning in advance of the team’s first playoff game since the 2018-19 season, the year before it drafted Johnson 29th overall out of Kentucky.

“I’m already tired. I did a lot of screaming this morning, so I’m going to go to sleep, take a nap, eat some food, relax, probably chill with my dogs a little bit. But just be stress free.”

“Screaming” at the top of his lungs is a daily habit for the boisterous 26-year-old native of Virginia.

Labeled the “heart and soul of the team” by coach Mitch Johnson and his teammates, Johnson is grateful he plays for a club that “allows him to be myself.”

“As much as I’m loud and obnoxious and speaking out and things like that, they allow me to be the best version of myself each and every day,” he said. “So I take that (heart and soul) label with pride. I take that and hold it close to my chest because this is where it started for me and this is the culture I was brought up in and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.”
