Jeremy Sochan is back on the court two and a half months after undergoing ankle surgery.

The second-year Spurs forward has been training with the Polish national team at the WKK Sport Center in Wroclaw, Poland, ahead of next month’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Spain. Sochan, 22, is expected to be a key contributor as the roster’s only active NBA player. He averaged 11.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 0.9 3s and 0.8 steals last season, setting career highs across the board.

The Oklahoma-born Sochan holds dual citizenship and has previously represented Poland at the 2019 FUBA U16 European Championship and 2022 EuroBasket qualification tournament. His mother, Aneta, was born in Warsaw and played college basketball at Division II Panhandle State before playing professionally for Polish club Polonia Warsaw.

Poland was placed in Group B along with the Bahamas and Finland. Group A consists of Spain, Angola and Lebanon.

Group play will pit Poland against the Bahamas on July 3 and Finland on July 4. The semifinals are scheduled for July 6 with the championship to take place the following day.

The winner of the Valencia Qualifying Tournament will earn one of the four remaining spots in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. The other qualifying tournaments will be held from July 2-7 in Puerto Rico, Greece and Latvia.

Poland is currently No. 15 in FIBA’s world rankings and is seeking its first bid to the Olympics since 1980. That won’t be an easy task with 2022 EuroBasket champion Spain pegged as the favorite on its home turf.

The good news for Poland is Sochan seems to have recovered well from an April surgery to treat a left ankle impingement that preemptively ended his second season in San Antonio with eight games remaining.

“Jeremy wants to play for the national team, for Poland, and he really wants to fight for the Olympic Games,” Poland national team director Lukasz Koszarek said, per basketnews.com.
