LAS VEGAS — Spurs fans will have to wait a bit longer to see marquee rookie Dylan Harper in action at Summer League.
The No. 2 overall pick of last month’s draft is expected to make his debut Saturday night against No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks after the Spurs ruled him out for their Vegas opener against Philadelphia on Thursday night at Thomas & Mack Center.
The Spurs “expect him to be ready for Saturday,” a team staffer said of Harper on Wednesday night. The former Rutgers star missed all three of the club’s games at the recently completed California Classic in San Francisco due to a minor groin issue diagnosed before the team left San Antonio.
The Spurs’ games against the 76ers and the Mavericks are scheduled to be televised by ESPN.
Summer Spurs coach Mike Noyes hinted after Tuesday’s 89-88 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in San Francisco that Harper might not play against Philadelphia.
Asked if the plan was for Harper to make his debut Thursday night, Noyes said, “I don’t know if ‘the plan’ is the right word, but it’s the hope. He looks great. I know Dylan wants to play, as any competitor would. We’ll make the decision that is best for the long term."
There were seven games scheduled for opening night of the Vegas Summer League on Thursday, including Flagg’s debut against Bronny James and the Lakers.

Harper wasn’t the only lottery pick ruled out for Thursday’s game.
No. 3 overall selection, VJ Edgecombe, won’t play against the Spurs due to a left thumb sprain, Philadelphia announced Wednesday night.
The Sixers said the former Baylor standout, who missed the team’s final two games at the Salt Lake City Summer League, will be re-evaluated Saturday.
Spurs set to bring back Jordan McLaughlin
Backup point guard Jordan McLaughlin is heading back to the Spurs.
The 29-year-old has agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal to provide some veteran depth behind a young but crowded point guard rotation.
McLaughlin arrived from Sacramento in February as part of the deal that also brought All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox from the Kings. He appeared in 18 games with the Spurs, averaging 2.5 points and 1.5 assists.
McLaughlin is expected to back up a guard group that includes Fox, reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and Harper.
Depth behind those three took on an added premium after the Spurs traded a pair of reserve guards, Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley, to Washington on Wednesday in exchange for journeyman center Kelly Olynyk.
McLaughlin’s return gives the Spurs 13 players on standard NBA contracts, with a maximum of two spots remaining to fill.

Spurs forward David Jones-Garcia landed on the All-California Classic Team after averaging 23 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in San Francisco.
