LAS VEGAS – Dylan Harper wants to play. The Spurs coaches want him to play. And ESPN really wants him to play.

But when it comes to the status of the No. 2 overall pick of last month’s draft for Saturday’s game against No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks, the Spurs are leaving it up to their medical staff.

“We’re going to remain optimistic, but I’ve said this a few times, long-term thinking prevails,” Spurs assistant coach Mike Noyes said after the Spurs’ 111-70 demolition of Philadelphia on Thursday night in the team’s Las Vegas Summer League opener.

“We’re not going to assume any risk. If there’s any risk at all, we’re going to be a little cautious. But he wants to play. We want him to play. So we’ll see how he does tomorrow.”

The Spurs announced before they left for the California Classic on July 4 that the 19-year-old guard from Rutgers would not play in San Francisco due to a minor groin issue, so he missed all three of the games in the Bay Area. He was on the bench cheering his teammates on again when the Spurs faced the 76ers.

When the Spurs ruled Harper out for Thursday’s game, a staffer said the club expected him to be ready to go Saturday against the Mavericks, but Noyes indicated the medical staff hasn’t fully cleared him yet.

ESPN is scheduled to broadcast the 3 p.m. game at Thomas & Mack Center to a national television audience.

One positive sign: Harper has been working out regularly with Summer Spurs, including participating in a walk-through at the team’s hotel Thursday morning.

“He looks good,” Noyes said.

Veterans show support for young players

The young Spurs had some prominent fans cheering them on Thursday night from front-row seats.

All-Star center Victor Wembanyama and several other Spurs veterans, including Harrison Barnes, Julian Champagnie, De’Aaron Fox, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan and Devin Vassell were in attendance at Thomas & Mack Center much to the delight of Noyes.

“It was great for our roster guys to be here,” Noyes said. “Appreciate them staying until the end and supporting us. That does mean a lot to the guys and to the staff.”

Several of the veterans visited with Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, recently hired assistant coach Sean Sweeney and assistant coach Matt Nielsen at halftime.

Former All-Star helping coach Summer Spurs

Former NBA star Rashard Lewis is one of five guest coaches assisting Noyes during Summer League.

Lewis, 45, played 16 years as a 6-foot-10 forward from 1998 through 2014. The graduate of Alief Elsik High in Houston was a two-time All-Star after entering the NBA as a second-round pick by the Seattle SuperSonics.

Lewis, who spent his first nine seasons in Seattle, posted career averages of 14.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists over 1,049 regular season games, with 842 starts. He was a member of the Miami Heat team that beat the Spurs in seven games to win the 2013 NBA title and the 2013-14 Heat squad that lost in the Finals to the Spurs in five games.

He also had stints with Orlando and Washington.

“It’s been amazing,” Spurs rookie forward Carter Bryant said of Lewis’ presence at Summer League. “I got to watch him play growing up, so for him to be another resource that I can have on a consistent basis is something that’s great for me.”
