(Bismack Biyombo)

(Charles Bassey)

(Malaki Branham)

(Blake Wesley)

2024-25 Spurs Player Reviews: Bismack Biyombo, Charles Bassey, Malaki Branham

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Cleveland Cavaliers

A trio of players who had roles at some point, but overall didn’t play much throughout the season.

Welcome to Pounding the Rock’s 2024-25 player reviews! The series will look at the players who finished the season with the San Antonio Spurs on guaranteed contracts and who played consequential minutes and/or a vital role (so no two-way players because we hardly saw them this year, and no players who were traded away). We also did not feel that Jordan McLaughlin met the threshold for a review, and the three players here played enough to cover but not enough for their own entire article, so they’re clumped together.

Also, based on your feedback, another change from prior seasons is instead of player grades coming from the individual writer (which can create inconsistency from player to player), everyone graded every player, and the cumulative grade was used in the article.

Enjoy!

Bismack Biyombo

2024-25 stats: 28 games, 5.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 58.5 FG%

Contract status: unrestricted free agent

Age: 33

With the Spurs bereft of healthy centers following the trade of Zach Collins and loss of Victor Wembanyama and Charles Bassey to injury, they turned to the free agency market and signed veteran big man Bismack Biyombo to two 10-day contracts before signing him for the remainder of the season. He did everything that was asked of him: he started in 26 of the 28 games he played in, received a few DNP’s but was always ready when called upon again, and he helped protect the rim (to the best of his abilities) while providing a soft touch as a relief outlet down low on offense. He wasn’t always consistent, but you could never doubt his effort.

Looking ahead, Biyombo’s chances of returning will likely depend on what the Spurs do with the draft and free agency (and possibly Charles Bassey). Biyombo would certainly be a solid third stringer and veteran presence on the bench next season, but he is not the long-term (or even short-term) answer as Wemby’s backup.

Final Grade: B-

Charles Bassey

2024-25 stats: 36 games, 4.4 points. 4.2 rebounds, 58.1 FG%

Contract status: unrestricted free agent

Age: 24

Health has not been on Bassey’s side, and for the third year in a row, the injury bug stung him in the knee. After his previous two seasons were ended prematurely by a fractured patella and torn ACL, this time he suffered a bone bruise and only participated in four of the Spurs’ final 35 games. Before that, he had his chances to earn the backup center position as they moved away from Collins, but per usual, inconsistency was the game of the game for Bassey. He looked great and confident in some games, and he looked lost in others. Unfortunately, his latest injury occurred right when Collins was traded and two weeks before Wemby was ruled out, so instead of getting his big chance to start as the team’s only healthy center, he too was lost to injury.

Similar to Biyombo, Bassey’s future may depend on what the Spurs do this summer. Unfortunately, health keeps getting in the way of his development, and that along with inconsistency when he has played shows he also may not be the answer as Wemby’s backup. He could still be a reliable third stringer if the Spurs bring him back, but he could also seek a bigger role elsewhere in free agency.

Final Grade: D+

Malaki Branham

2024-25 stats: 47 games, 5 points, 2.1 assists, 40.5 3P%

Contract status: 1 year, $4.96 mil remaining (team option picked up)

Age: 22

Malaki Branham may have easily been the most disappointing Spur this season (at least among those who finished the season with the team), in no small part because he was the only rotation player from last year who lost his job. The additions of Stephon Castle and Chris Paul were always going to make guard minutes harder to come by, but the most telling thing about about Branham’s season was when all the dust settled — Tre Jones was gone and Castle and Paul were both starting — it ended up being Blake Wesley who got minutes off the bench, not Branham. While he’s is still the better shooter of the two, they clearly valued Wesley’s hustle and more well-rounded (albeit flawed) game more.

The Spurs somewhat surprisingly picked up both Branham and Wesley’s fourth year rookie options last summer (along with Jeremy Sochan’s), so as of now, Branham will be back next season. At the same time, his contract is very tradeable, and there could be another team out there that would value his shooting off the bench more. The Spurs could also waive him without their cap space taking a big hit. At this point, it’s hard to know if we’ve seen Branham in his final game as a Spur, but if not, he has a lot of work to do to get back into the rotation next season.

Final Grade: D
