(Blake Wesley)
(Sandro Mamukelashvili)

2024-25 Spurs Player Reviews: Blake Wesley
The defensive point guard didn’t show enough on the offensive end.
Welcome to Pounding the Rock’s 2024-25 player reviews! The series will look at the players who finished the season with the San Antonio Spurs on guaranteed contracts and who played consequential minutes and/or a vital role (so no two-way players because we hardly saw them this year, and no players who were traded away).
Blake Wesley
2024-25 stats: 58 games, 3.7 points, 2.0 assists, 43.5 FG%, 29.3 3PT%
Contract status: Team option for $4.7M
Age: 21
Sometimes to succeed in the NBA, you just have to do one thing extremely well. Specialists are abundant in this league, but the outstanding ones, the unexpected heroes who swing playoff series, have a second or third skill to back up the one thing they excel at.
Blake Wesley is a pest on the defensive end. His length and athleticism at the point of attack make him a fun change-of-pace guard off the bench. We saw a refinement of that skill in his third NBA season. Wesley has a career-low in fouls (0.8 per game) and a career-high in steal rate (2.6%). Despite limited playing time, thanks to the Spurs adding new guards like Stephon Castle, Chris Paul, and De’Aaron Fox, Wesley showed some defensive improvements this year.
But Wesley’s issue has never been his defense. It’s the offensive end of the floor that has plagued him. Wesley continued struggling shooting the ball from deep and finishing at the rim, knocking down just 29.3% of his threes and 50% of his shots from 0-3 feet. He doesn’t have much of a mid-range game and hasn’t proven to be a creator in half-court offense. His best offense comes from the chaos he creates on defense. He thrives in a transition-heavy, fast-paced game.
Wesley had his moments where he showed what the ideal version of himself can be. In April, against the Denver Nuggets, he knocked down three triples and played tough defense with a lot of effort in his best game of the season. Those moments come too infrequently to earn minutes on a team seriously trying to win. Right now, he’s a defensive specialist who must develop the other aspects of his game.
Final Grade: C
Best Game: April 2, 15 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 5-6 from the field, 3-3 from three in a 113-106 win over the Denver Nuggets
