(Sandro Mamukelashvili)

2024-25 Spurs Player Reviews: Sandro Mamukelashvili

NBA: New York Knicks at San Antonio Spurs

Mamu showed flashes of improvement and had big games, but couldn’t make a convincing case to become a rotation player in the NBA.

Welcome to Pounding the Rock’s 2024-25 player reviews! The series will look at the players who finished the season with the San Antonio Spurs on guaranteed contracts and who played consequential minutes and/or a vital role (so no two-way players because we hardly saw them this year, and no players who were traded away).

Sandro Mamukelashvili

2024-25 stats: 61 games, 6.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 50.2 FG%, 37.3 3PT%

Contract status: Unrestricted free agent

Age: 25

Two things help fringe NBA players stick around: possessing traits of an archetype considered valuable and having flashes of production when the opportunity to play arrives. Sandro Mamukelashvili ticks both boxes as a potential stretch big who rebounds and makes his presence felt whenever he gets to see the court, whether it’s garbage time or meaningful stretches. Mamu has never come close to playing 1,000 minutes in any of his four seasons in the NBA, but he’s done enough to pique the interest of the Bucks first and the Spurs later, not because of his production but his potential usefulness.

The 2024/25 season shows why he’s been worth a gamble despite clear flaws that keep him out of the rotation for long stretches. The 25-year-old power forward boasted a solid rebounding percentage, rarely turned the ball over, posted the third-highest average speed on the team, which shows his constant and purposeful movement, and made a decent amount of threes. He was physical and had a high motor while being mistake-averse and providing shooting, which is exactly what a stretch four that brings energy off the bench should do. The outline of a valuable NBA player is there, and because of his charisma and positive locker room presence, it’s tempting not to look any closer.

However, the flaws are impossible to ignore once Mamu is under the microscope. The raw production is nice, but it happened mostly in garbage time. Mamu spent a third of his total minutes in what pbpstats.com calls low leverage possessions, which means the team was up or down for significant margins and with regular rotation players off the floor. He made 60 threes this season, but 41 came with the team down double digits, and 26 with the lead or deficit being over 16 points. He shot 26 percent from outside when the game was within 10 points. Defensively, he was solid at a team level but remained stuck between positions, too slow to guard perimeter players and too small to provide rim protection.

Mamukelashvili will always go all out, and he can be helpful in the right matchups when his shot is falling. He pairs well with Victor Wembanyama. Just like he did the year before, he closed the season well enough that the idea of him sticking around the league despite not making any serious, tangible improvement in any area is not crazy. He was clearly beloved in the locker room, and his intensity made him a fan favorite who made some really rough games more entertaining by bringing energy. What makes Mamu a tough player to grade is perspective. Anyone who values sporadic production and entertainment from deep bench guys will love him. Those who look for more will have no choice but to be more critical.

Looking ahead

Mamu will be an unrestricted free agent who should only get minimum offers, so the Spurs could likely retain him if they want to. Most of his threes came in garbage time, and his best performances happened late in the season, so it’s easy to dismiss his production. At the same time, he didn’t really have many opportunities to show his worth earlier and in more high-intensity environments, and he did have his moments when he was asked to contribute. Bringing him back could make some sense, especially considering the chemistry he showed with Wembanyama at times and his positive presence in the locker room.

The issue is roster spots. The Spurs have 10 players on the books for next season, plus three draft picks and the mid-level exception to use. They need to add a backup center and a backup point guard. Mamu won’t likely be a priority. If he’s there after the dust settles in free agency, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to retain him, but there’s an equally valid case for moving on after two and a half mostly uneventful seasons.

Best game: March 19 vs. the New York Knicks, AKA The Mamu Game: 34 points on 14 shots, 7-for-7 from beyond the arc, nine rebounds, three assists, and a surreal and hilarious Flava Flav appearance.

Final grade: C+
