(De’Aaron Fox)
(Devin Vassell)
(Chris Paul)
(Harrison Barnes)
(Bismack Biyombo)
评分:A-
(Keldon Johnson)
(Jeremy Sochan)
(Julian Champagnie)
(Stephon Castle)
(Sandro Mamukelashvili)
(Mitch Johnson)

Grades: San Antonio Spurs at New Orleans Pelicans – Game #56
On Sunday, the San Antonio Spurs blew a 17-point lead against the New Orleans Pelicans. Tonight, the Spurs blew a 19-point lead and ended up losing to the Pelicans by a final count of 109-103. San Antonio is now 24-32 on the season.
Things couldn’t have gone much better for the Spurs early on. At the end of the first quarter, the good guys had a 30-16 advantage. Things were going fine in the second quarter until a few minutes before halftime. The Pelicans exploded offensively to get within two points at intermission, 51-49.
San Antonio kept fighting and were able to stay ahead the entire third quarter and the beginning of the fourth period. Unfortunately, the Spurs saw their offense flatline in the final stanza as the Pelicans once again completed a comeback.
This classifies as another disappointing loss for the Spurs. San Antonio is trying to win but they’re not playing well enough on either end — even against a lowly team like the 15-43 Pelicans.
Stats: Spurs at Pelicans
Spurs at Pelicans – Final Grades
De’Aaron Fox
The good: Fox had six steals and gave really good effort on that end of the court. He had some quality passes and finished with nine assists. He hit a big three-pointer in the fourth quarter that gave the Spurs some hope. The bad: Fox missed his other eight three-point attempts. He was also inefficient inside of the arc and only shot three free throws. Passing-wise, he missed too many open teammates and tallied six turnovers. Fox has to play better than this for the Spurs to win games without Wembanyama.
Grade: D
Devin Vassell
Vassell was terrible in the first half. At halftime, he was 1-for-7 from the field and did almost nothing else. In the second half, Vassell finally showed some signs of life. He started attacking the basket and had much more success. Hopefully his 16 second half points are a sign of things to come because this dude has been stuck in a horrific slump lately.
Grade: C-
Chris Paul
Paul played decently well. In 33 minutes, he totaled ten assists, drained three three-pointers and was active in loose ball situations. He took reasonably good care of the ball and provided an ample amount of playmaking even though he was mostly playing shooting guard. Defense, though, was oftentimes an issue for Paul, as the Pelicans took advantage of his lack of size.
Grade: B-
Harrison Barnes
Barnes did his job for the most part. He hit half of his eight three-point attempts. He moved the ball well, battled on the boards more than usual and played a very clean game (no turnovers, no fouls). Barnes wasn’t great but he did what he’s supposed to do.
Grade: B
Bismack Biyombo
Biyombo is making the most of these ten-day contracts. He posted his second consecutive double-double and did so in fine fashion. He has been great on the boards and he’s providing rim protection. He sets mean screens, rolls well and makes decent decisions with the ball. Biyombo can be clumsy sometimes but, all in all, he’s giving the Spurs some good minutes.
Grade: A-
Keldon Johnson
Johnson cooled off a little bit but he played pretty well once again. He was 4-for-7 from the field and buried a couple threes. His decision-making wasn’t as crisp as it has been lately but he wasn’t terrible in that regard. His defense was better than normal and his energy level helped the cause.
Grade: B+
Jeremy Sochan
Sochan gave every ounce of his being. He crashed the glass with relentless effort. He cut with purpose on offense. Defensively, his positioning and physicality were both impressive. Sochan did get in the way sometimes and he could have been tighter with the ball, though.
Grade: B
Julian Champagnie
It was a frustrating night at the office for Champagnie. He was only 1-for-5 from the field even though he had plenty of opportunities to help San Antonio get going. Defensively, Champagnie exhibited a lot of moxie but didn’t have much to show for it at the end of the night.
Grade: C+
Stephon Castle
Castle only played 12 minutes. This time, his shortened leash was deserved. His shot-selection was highly questionable. His passing was iffy. He turned the ball over three times and picked up four fouls. The rookie played … well, like a rookie.
Grade: D
Sandro Mamukelashvili
Mamukelashvili was mad at himself most of the night. His frustration was easy to understand. He missed all five of his three-point attempts. To make matters worse, he started hesitating on open threes. Mamu also only pulled down one rebound in 12 minutes. On the positive side of the ledger, I liked his hustle on both ends and he was able to make a couple plays on the defensive side of the ball.
Grade: C
Mitch Johnson
I mean, yeah, these were two disheartening losses for the Spurs. The coaching staff deserves a healthy serving of the blame. The offense was rudderless for much of the game. The playcalling isn’t helping matters. Tonight, the defense was pretty good early but then struggled as the game progressed. The worst part is the fact that Johnson is playing his veterans heavy minutes and the Spurs are still doing bad. It’d be different if he was losing while building up the youngsters — but that’s not what’s happening.
