San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama answers a question from a reporter during a news conference held before the last game of the season against the Toronto Raptors at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, April 13, 2025. It was the first time Wembanyama has addressed the media since his season-ending injury, deep vein thrombosis, was announced in late February.

Spurs star Victor Wembanyama knew what was coming that day in February.

Having read up on three English words he had recently come to learn quite well – deep vein thrombosis – Wembanyama braced for four more words he really, really didn’t want to hear.

Out for the season.

“I wouldn’t say I was shocked,” Wembanyama said, “but to hear it from the mouth of a professional is different than to imagine it.”

Upbeat and freshly braided, Wembanyama addressed the media before Sunday’s season finale against Toronto for the first time since deep vein thrombosis deep-sixed his second promising NBA campaign.

Though declining to go into detail regarding his medical charts, the 21-year-old All-Star called his blood-clot issue a “slight setback” and said he remains on track to be a full go for the start of training camp in the fall.

“I know I’m over with this problem,” Wembanyama said.

Wembanyama said he has not ruled out playing for the French national team at the Eurobasket tournament in August, though a decision on that is not expected until the summer.

“I’m neither late or early,” Wembanyama said when asked about a timeline for a return to full basketball activities. “But it’s a process and there’s definitely steps me to reach before that."

Wembanyama was flying high in February, his sophomore season off to a rousing start.

He was a month removed from a star turn in Paris, wowing his hometown crowd in a pair of games against Indiana and had installed himself as the shoo-in favorite to win his first NBA Defensive Player of the Year award.

The coup de grace was an appearance in the All-Star game in San Francisco, where the 7-foot-3 Wembayama stood tallest – literally – among the greatest in the sport.

He had no way of knowing it was his last time on a basketball court this season.

At the time, Wembanyama had been feeling a heaviness in his shoulder and overall fatigue for several weeks. In the days after returning from All-Star weekend, doctors discovered the cause.

Deep vein thrombosis. Out for the season.

“Looking back I did feel a certain way,” Wembanyama said. “I mean, I wasn’t in the best shape ever at the All-Star game.”

Wembanyama spent the past two months undergoing treatment for his blood clot issue, though he declined to reveal whether the plan included surgery.

He has since been cleared to begin weightlifting and light basketball work, though full contact remains verboten at this point.

“It’s all very controlled,” Wembanyama said. “Even though sometimes I feel like I would like to do more, it’s logical medical direction.”

From the moment Wembanyama’s blood clot issue surfaced in February, the Spurs have said they expect their franchise centerpiece to make a full recovery before training camp begins in late September. Acting coach Mitch Johnson said Sunday nothing has changed regarding that timeline.

“Everything that we’ve said stays consistent,” Johnson said. “I know it’s not hot news, but it’s good news.”

Wembanyama’s teammates are looking forward to having him back sooner rather than later, De’Aaron Fox especially.

Acquired from Sacramento at the trade deadline, Fox played in five games with Wembanyama before deep vein thrombosis struck.

Fox eventually shut down his own season in March to undergo surgery on an injured pinkie on his shooting hand.

He expects to be cleared for full basketball activities about the same time as Wembanyama. Then the real fun begins.

“We want to be the best pick-and-roll combo in the league,” said Fox, who averaged 23.5 points in 65 games with the Kings and Spurs. “We have two guys that are extremely dynamic, can pick and choose our spots whenever we want. It is going to be a hard thing to stop. So having this summer to be able to work together is definitely good.”

Wembanyama ended his season averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds and an NBA-best 3.8 blocks per game. Despite missing the final 30 games, Wembanyama finished as the league leader in total blocks with 178. Heading into Sunday’s slate of season finales, Milwaukee’s Brook Lopez was a distant second with 148.

Because Wembanyama only appeared in 46 contests, he did not meet the 65-game threshold the league requires for him to be eligible for regular-season honors including Defensive Player of the Year or All-NBA.

He said he was excited by what he saw from his teammates in his absence, even as the Spurs stumbled to their sixth consecutive losing season. The Spurs were 23-29 when Wembanyama played his final game of the season in Boston. They headed into Sunday’s season-ender at 33-48, eyeing a 12-win improvement over Wembanyama’s rookie season.

“I think my teammates really showed some incredible things in the past months and really built the future,” Wembanyama said.

The Spurs’ future, however, is undeniably built around Wembanyama. His blood clot issue has put a temporary pause in the club’s ongoing rebuilding project. Wembanyama is determined not to let those three English words – deep vein thrombosis – slow him down.

“It’s all about perspective,” Wembanyama said. “All of us in the league, we do with what we get. I’m still in the 1% luckiest people, so I got nothing to complain about.”

For now, Wembanyama will continue with his treatment plan. He will work to get back on the court and do what he does best.

He has six words for the rest of the NBA when that day comes.

“I’m hungry,” he said. “And I’ll be ready.”
