Is a quick return in the cards for injured Spurs star Victor Wembanyam

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) slaps hands with San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) during the first half of an NBA game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, Dec. 29, 2025.

INDIANAPOLIS – Victor Wembanyama missed his 13th game of the season Friday at Indiana, but Spurs coach Mitch Johnson believes the All-Star center could be back on the floor soon.

Wembanyama did not make the trip with the team to Indianapolis after suffering a minor knee injury late in Wednesday’s home victory over New York.

Subsequent MRIs revealed no ligament damage to Wembanyama’s knee. That plus reports from Wembanyama himself have Johnson optimistic his star’s latest stint on the injured list might be a short one.

“Obviously it’s a quick trip,” Johnson said before tipoff at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. "It was just wise to keep him home and to make sure he had all the resources and all the support he could from being there. We’re encouraged. We’re going to take it day-by-day.”

Asked if Wembanyama would be in play to suit up Saturday at home against Portland, Johnson did not completely rule it out.

“It’s too quick to say for sure,” Johnson said. "But we’re encouraged by what we’ve seen.”

After Saturday, the Spurs have two days off before taking the floor again Tuesday at Memphis. It would not be surprising to see Wembanyama back on the floor by some point next week.

The timetable could be a bit longer for the Spurs’ other missing starter, shooting guard Devin Vassell.

Vassell suffered a left adductor strain in Monday’s loss against Cleveland, an injury later confirmed by an MRI.

“That will be more than a few games,” Johnson said. “Just kind of have to continue to see how he ramps up and feels.”

The team is hopeful Vassell’s injury will not be a lingering one once he fully heals.

“We are encouraged by it in terms of, it should not be something that will be nagging him for the year,” Johnson said. "We just want to get him all the way right.”
