In the battle of Champagnies, the Spurs’ version owns bragging rights

BOSTON – Washington guard Justin Champagnie buried a contested 3-pointer Monday and gave a taunting smirk to the unfortunate Spurs defender who had been in his nearest vicinity.

It was a look Julian Champagnie has known his entire life.

“He didn’t say anything, he just looked at me,” Julian Champagnie said. “I had to laugh. He made the shot. What else could I do?”

The Spurs’ 131-121 victory over the Wizards marked the last renewal of a sibling rivalry that has been ongoing since Justin Champangie was seven minutes old.

The twins-turned-NBA-role-players grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., with a brotherly love that also meant wanting to tear each other apart on the basketball court.

“I’ve been busting his ass my whole life,” Justin Champagnie said.

It is a charge the Spurs’ Champagnie doesn’t dispute.

The younger of the two by seven minutes, Julian Champagnie spent much of his childhood trying to get one over on his older brother. When Julian won his first game of one-on-one against Justin at a local park, it made a moment neither brother would soon forget.

“I had to get him back after that,” Justin Champagnie said. “I had to kill him the next three games.”

The twins went their separate ways after high school, with Julian heading to college at St. John’s and Justin to Pittsburgh.

From there, the Champagnies took a similar path to the NBA.

Julian signed a two-way contract with Philadelphia before landing with the Spurs. Justin plowed through a series of temporary contracts with Toronto, Boston and a training camp deal with Miami before hooking up with Washington last February.

The two talk regularly and root for each other, except when playing one another.

“We feed off each other,” Justin Champagnie said. “We’re both grown me on our own path in life, trying to figure it out. The best way to do that is together.”

Julian Champagnie’s Spurs teammates got a kick out of watching him go head-to-head with his spitting image Monday.

“I couldn’t tell which one was which,” forward Jeremy Sochan said. “I was talking to Julian on the bench and was like, ‘You guys are (expletive) the same. They way you act, talk, look, even the facial expressions. It’s all the same.”

Justin Champagnie had the better individual performance Monday, with 14 points off the bench. Julian Champagnie had six.

The Spurs won the game, beating Washington for the second time this season.

That would appear to give the younger brother the bragging rights in the Champagnie family. Julian Champagnie is not so sure he will be allowed the satisfaction.

“Technically not,” Julian said. “He’s going to counter with the fact he had 14 and I had six.”

Newcomer Biyombo ready when needed

Newly signed big man Bismack Biyombo was active Monday in Washington, though he did not get in the game.

Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson opted to give the 32-year-old Biyombo more time to get acclimated to his new team before throwing him into the fray.

Johnson did not think it would take Biyombo, a 13-year NBA veteran, long to get up to speed. It is possible Biyombo makes his Spurs debut Wednesday at Boston.

“I don’t think it will take much time,” Johnson said. “He plays a very simple game, and I mean that in a very complimentary way.”

The Spurs signed Biyombo to a 10-day deal on Sunday to provide frontcourt depth behind All-Star center Victor Wembanyama.

If and when Biyombo gets in the game, the Spurs expect him to help provide a boost in the paint and on the glass.

“The expectations are what they are, what he’s done for many teams throughout his career,” Johnson said. “Bringing energy and activity and playing his role.”
