NEW YORK — When Spurs forward Julian Champagnie walks down the street in New York, he can sometimes feel the eyes on him.
He was born and raised in Brooklyn, after all, and occupies the same NBA starting lineup with global superstar Victor Wembanyama.
Of course, he’s going to get recognized.
Champagnie has an NBA-playing twin brother, which also sometimes explains some things.
“I get noticed so many times,” Champagnie said, “for being Justin.”
Following the shooting display one of the Champagnie brothers put on Thursday against the Brooklyn Nets, there should be no confusion now.
Justin Champagnie is an up-and-coming role player for the Washington Wizards in the process of building himself a nice NBA career.
Julian Champagnie is the Spurs sharpshooter who just shot the lights out of the Barclays Center for the hottest team in the league.
Champagnie’s 26 points and six 3-pointers proved pivotal in the 126-110 thumping of the lowly Nets that ran the Spurs’ season-best winning streak to 11 in a row.
It was a homecoming made sweeter by the fact that a third Champagnie sibling — the twins’ younger brother, Jaylen — was in attendance.
“I gave him something to go home and brag to his friends about,” Champagnie said.
Champagnie grew up in Brooklyn, three subway stops away from the Barclays Center on the B train. On days when the weather was nice, he probably wouldn’t have even bothered taking his Metro card to the Nets home arena.
“I could walk home from here,” Champagnie said. “I know these streets very well.”
It won’t be long before Brooklyn knows him back.

Over his four-year pro career, the 24-year-old Champagnie has made a handful of returns to New York in an NBA jersey.
This one hit a little different.
This time, Champagnie came home as a key component for a Spurs team in the process of taking the NBA by storm. Thursday’s victory polished off an 11-0 February for the Spurs, marking the third unbeaten month in franchise history. It was the first since the 2013-14 club chalked up a 16-0 March.
The Spurs do not play again until Sunday’s clash with the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on the first day of March.
“Eleven wins in a row is hard in this league,” said rookie guard Dylan Harper, who grew up across the Hudson River from New York in Franklin Lakes, N.J. “We’re just going to try to keep on going and build off it.”
The Spurs’ latest winning streak — their longest since 2015-16— has inflated their record to 43-16, only one game in the loss column behind Oklahoma City for first place in the Western Conference.
Spurs star Victor Wembanyama called the Spurs unblemished February “a satisfying month.”
“It feels like an accomplishment,” he said. “Does it mean it was perfect? No. It’s never really perfect, but it’s really satisfying.”
Including victories in a pair of designated “home” games in Austin over Phoenix and Sacramento, the Spurs are 7-0 on their rodeo road trip.
In doing so, the team has secured its first winning rodeo trip in 10 years with two games remaining.
“You feel the games we’re stacking and the confidence we’re playing with and the togetherness,” forward Keldon Johnson said. “We’re going to continue to replicate that so we can keep stacking games.”
To Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, the real satisfaction comes in the manner the Spurs have won the past 11 games.
It has been a “all hands on deck” sort of effort.
“When you look back at this month, there wasn’t one guy who went on some kind of historical stretch,” Mitch Johnson said. “It feels like the guys in that locker room have found a lot of different ways to win. That’s a sign of growth.”
Indeed, during the Spurs’ 11-game streak, the team has boasted six different leading scorers.
The only player to pace the Spurs in points in consecutive games was Devin Vassell, who did it in victories at Detroit and Toronto right before the road trip arrived in the Big Apple.
“That’s kind of what we take pride in,” Champagnie said. “Anybody on any night can be the leading scorer. That’s been shown throughout the whole year.”
Thursday, it was the Brooklynite’s turn.
Back in his old stomping grounds, Champagnie scorched the Nets with his highest-scoring night since Jan. 20.
He was 10 of 14 from the floor and 6 of 9 from 3-point range, and posted 19 of his points in the first half.
“He is one of the most impeccable guys on the team,” Wembanyama said. “He embraces his role in a perfect way. I hope it pays off for him.”
It certainly did against the Nets.
Unlike trips to the Barclays Center as a kid, Champagnie did not take the B Train home Thursday. He did not tackle the 10 blocks on foot.
He left the arena on the Spurs’ team bus bound for Manhattan, but somehow walking on air.
“As a team, we have a target on our back,” Champagnie said. “We want to be great and other teams want to take us down. Coming home and being on one of the best teams in the league and still being able to go out there and do your thing, that’s big time.”
