3 Takeaways as Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox outgun Wizards

WASHINGTON – Three straight Spurs games had gone down to the final possession heading into Monday, heart palpitations becoming a fact of life for the team and its fans.
As the Spurs went into the fourth quarter at Washington ahead by only four against the lowly Wizards, acting coach Mitch Johnson buckled up for another white-knuckle affair.
“It felt like it was destined to get there,” Johnson said.
Instead, the Spurs did something they could not do previously in Atlanta, Charlotte or Orlando. They sucked all the drama out of the final seconds.
With Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox playing masterfully off one another, the Spurs pulled away for a 131-121 win at Capitol One Arena against a Washington club with the NBA’s worst record (9-44).
Wembanyama scored 31 points with 15 rebounds and three blocks, while Fox finished with 30 points.
It was the most the two had totaled together since last week’s trade brought Fox from Sacramento.
The pair combined for 22 in the fourth quarter, including all of the Spurs’ points during a span of 7:13 that put the game away.
“We’re trying to develop that kind of chemistry, trying to develop that two-man game,” said Fox, whose produced his highest-scoring night in Spurs uniform. “It’s a learning process. This is the (fourth) game for us, and we haven’t even had a true practice yet. We’re continuing to learn each other.”
All nine Wizards who played Monday scored in double figures, led by Tristan Vukcevic’s 18 off the bench. It was the first time in club history Washington had at least nine players appear in a game and reach double digits
That balanced attack helped Washington overcome an 18-point deficit in the first quarter, made possible by a 14-point flurry from Wembanyama.
Just like three previous games – a win at Atlanta and losses at Charlotte and Orlando – Monday’s game appeared ticketed to go down to the final possession.
Until it didn’t.
After the Wizards pulled within 120-115 with 4:29 to play, Fox finished a backdoor layup from Wembanyama out of a timeout, Wembanyama found his way to a layup and then banked in a jumper over Malcolm Brogodon to keep Washington at bay.
“We showed some solid attitude and we stayed steady on both sides of the court,” Wembanyama said. “It’s the key. It’s always the first step.”
With the victory, the Spurs improved to 23-28, surpassing last season’s victory total with 31 games to go.
Here are three takeaways from Monday’s win in Washington, as the Spurs head to Boston to conclude the first leg of their rodeo trip Wednesday:
1. Fox’s aggression found at the foul line
In attack mode throughout the night, Fox attempted 18 free throws on Monday, making 15.
It was the most free-throw tries for a Spurs player since Jakob Poeltl had 21 attempts against Indiana on Oct. 21, 2022.
“We will need him and Victor both to put tremendous pressure on the rim at times,” Johnson said. “He did that tonight. When you have those dry spells, that can alleviate that for sure.”
It marked the second-most foul shots Fox had attempted in a game this season, behind the 19 he tried in a Sacramento victory over Utah in November.
The Wizards clearly had trouble keeping the speedy Fox in front of them. Fox said he was just exploiting the way Washington was guarding him.
“Just continue to play downhill, that’s what you try to do,” Fox said. “I think all of their fouls were reach-in fouls, so I think it was more what they were doing than what I was doing. If they’re going to do that, you just continue to try and touch the paint and good things happen.”
2. Spurs’ Champagnie takes brotherly bowl
For Spurs guard Julian Champagnie, Monday marked his second game to play against his twin brother Justin, a reserve guard with the Wizards.
The pair shared the court for a few minutes, but guarded each other sparingly. One memorable occasion came in the second half, when Justin Champagnie buried a 3-pointer over his brother and mockingly stared him down.

“He didn’t say anything, he just looked at me,” Julian Champagnie said. “I had to laugh. He made the shot. What else could I do?”
Justin Champagnie finished with 14 points. Julian Champagnie had six. The Spurs won the game, however, which should give Julian the bragging rights in the Champagnie family.
Julian Champagnie is not so certain he will be allowed the satisfaction.
“Technically not,” Julian said. “He’s going to counter with the fact he had 14 and I had six.”
3. Spurs still too liberal with second chances
The Spurs won the rebounding battle 43-42 on Monday, and even took the matchup on the offensive glass 11-10.
Washington still outscored them on second-chance points 17-6.
Newcomer Bismack Biyombo – signed to a 10-day contract Sunday to assist with just such a problem – did not play in the first game he was eligible with the Spurs.
Johnson opted to give the 32-year-old Biyombo more time to get acclimated to his new team before throwing him into the fray.
He did not think it would take Biyombo, a 13-year NBA veteran, long to get up to speed.
“I don’t think it will take much time,” Johnson said. “He plays a very simple game, and I mean that in a very complimentary way.”
What are the expectations for Biyombo if and when he gets in a game?
“The expectations are what they are, what he’s done for many teams throughout his career,” Johnson said. “Bringing energy and activity and playing his role.”
