MEMPHIS, Tenn. – About an hour before tipoff against Miami on Saturday at the Frost Bank Center, Spurs players learned word that their bid at opening February with a victory had taken a sizeable blow.

Victor Wembanyama was ruled out with a lingering illness that had been bugging him for the better part of a week.

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30), forward Keldon Johnson (0) and center Victor Wembanyama (1) laugh together on the bench during the fourth quarter against the Milwaukee Bucks at Frost Bank Center on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs defeated the Bucks 144-118.

The Spurs’ 21-year-old All-Star had been feeling under the weather since the team returned from Paris earlier in the week, a condition he blamed on his immune system’s rocky transition back to the pollen-ridden air of South Texas.

“Since we came back from France, allergies have been hitting more than ever,” Wembanyama said. “Just since we came back though, so it’s getting better.”

A night after going for 30 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks in a rousing victory over Milwaukee, Wembanyama was not on the bench as the Spurs lost a 105-103 heartbreaker to the Heat in their final game in San Antonio before the start of the rodeo road trip.

It marked only the sixth game Wembanyama has missed this season, with the Spurs going 2-4 in those contests.

Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said after Saturday’s game it was too soon to determine if Wembanyama might be available for the trip opener Monday at Memphis.

“Obviously he’s not feeling 100 percent,” Johnson said. “I expect it to be minor. I have no details, but it didn’t sound like there’s anything drastic or extreme.”

With their centerpiece on both ends of the court out of commission Saturday, the Spurs knew what would have to change in their game plan to stand a chance against the Heat.

“Everything,” guard Devin Vassell said.

Give the Spurs a bit of credit there. They took Miami to the wire, losing on a tie-breaking 19-footer from Bam Adebayo as time expired.

Fourth-year big man Charles Bassey earned his third career start in Wembanyama’s place, and supplied nine points to go with a career-best 14 rebounds.

“We’ve had times this year where people were called upon and stepped up to the plate,” Johnson said. “I thought Charles Bassey was superb.”

The Spurs hung in behind 19 points off the bench from Keldon Johnson and 18 from Vassell, though it took an 8-of-22 shooting performance to reach that total.

Surprisingly, the Spurs’ defense held tough without the league’s leading shot-blocker, holding the Heat to 105 points. It marked only the second time this season the Spurs had given up 105 points or less and lost.

In the end, the Spurs could not overcome 30 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from Adebayo, or his final attempt of the night.

“I thought we gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game,” forward Harrison Barnes said. “You just have to give credit to Bam for making that shot.”

Spurs’ thoughts with Murray

Members of the Spurs were disheartened this week to learn of the latest setback for former teammate Dejounte Murray, who suffered a season-ending tear of his right Achilles tendon while playing for New Orleans against Boston on Friday.

It was the latest in a string of setbacks for the 28-year-old Murray, who spent six seasons with the Spurs after becoming the club’s first-round draft pick in 2016.

Murray missed the entire 2018-19 campaign after rupturing his right anterior cruciate ligament during the preseason.

“He’s been in a spot like this before when he was with us,” said Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson, who has known Murray since he was a teenager in Seattle. “Injuries are a crappy part of the game, but he – like so many others – will be back stronger and get through it.”

Murray is in his first season with the Pelicans after playing the previous two in Atlanta.
