让他们在没有NBA盖帽王和 presumptive Defensive Player of the Year 的情况下打满全场,感觉是一个艰巨的任务。

3 takeaways as Adebayo’s buzzer-beater lifts Heat over Spurs

For a full 48 minutes, the Spurs and Miami Heat played an entertaining if not precisely beautiful game of basketball Saturday.

With one flick of the wrist, Bam Adebayo put an abrupt end to it.

Adebayo’s 19-foot jumper as time expired gave the beleaguered Heat a 105-103 victory over the Victor Wembanyama-less Spurs at the Frost Bank Center.

“I thought we gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game,” Spurs forward Harrison Barnes said. “You just have to give credit to Bam for making that shot.”

Adebayo flirted with a triple-double, going for 30 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. He got help off the bench from Terry Rozier, who threw in 19 points and five 3-pointers.

With the walk-off victory, the Heat sent the Spurs unceremoniously into their annual rodeo trip, which begins Monday in Memphis.

One night after smacking around Milwaukee 144-118, the Spurs’ chances of recording their first two-game winning streak since Jan. 3 were struck a blow when Wembanyama was ruled out with illness.

What did Wembanyama’s absence change?

“Everything,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said.

The Spurs hung in behind 19 points off the bench from Keldon Johnson and 18 from Vassell, who needed 22 field goal tries to reach that total. Vassell was 1-of-10 from the 3-point arc.

Even so, the Spurs found themselves in a dog fight headed down the stretch.

“I thought we scratched and clawed to get back into the game, stay in the game and give ourselves a chance to win at the end,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “There were a couple plays there at the end that the ball just didn’t go our way.”

After Chris Paul missed a paint jumper he’s made hundreds of times in his 20 NBA seasons, Miami took over with 3.2 seconds to go with the score tied.

The Spurs defended the Heat’s final possession well enough, leaving Adebayo to send the Spurs packing with a contested jump shot.

It was a deflating loss for the Spurs, who dropped their final game at the Frost Bank Center until March 2, when they return to from the rodeo trip to face Oklahoma City.

It was an uplifting victory for Miami, which has been dealing with multiple suspensions to star guard Jimmy Butler as he tries to orchestrate his way out of town.

Give Adebayo credit for supplying both sets of feelings at the buzzer.

“He hit a lot of tough shots tonight,” Johnson said, “and that was the biggest one.”

Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s defeat, which dropped the Spurs to 21-25:

1. Surprisingly, defense held up without Victor

For much of the season, the Spurs have had trouble defending without Wembanyama on the floor even for a few minutes.

Asking them to hold up for a full game without the NBA’s leading shot-blocker and presumptive Defensive Player of the Year felt like a tough ask.

Instead, the Spurs’ defense held up OK.

In the modern NBA, surrendering only 105 points is usually enough to win a game. The Spurs have lost only once this season when giving up fewer than that number, a 104-93 defeat against Phoenix in early December.

“We were connected,” Vassell said. “I feel like we forced them into a lot of tough shots, and they made a couple tough shots. So hats off to them.”

The Spurs did a decent job against Miami’s newly minted All-Star, Tyler Herro, who ended with 11 points and failed to record a 3-point field goal for the first time in 74 games.

Instead, it was the Spurs’ offense that let them down against Miami.

After a Sandro Mamukelashvili 3-pointer awarded the Spurs a 99-96 edge with 5:13 to play, they could manage only four points and one field goal the rest of the way.

Paul knotted the game with a pair of free throws with 1:36 to play, and again on a floater with 59 seconds to go.

He missed a decent look at a fadeaway in the paint that might have put the Spurs ahead with 4.3 ticks remaining. That set the stage for Adebayo’s game-winner.

2. Bassey is no Wemby, but was game

Charles Bassey had the unenviable task of filling in for the Spurs’ lone All-Star and did what he could.

The 24-year-old is not the world’s most skilled center. Still raw and learning the game, he can also be caught out of position on defense.

What Bassey can do — and always does — is play hard. That energy helped the Spurs on Saturday in his third career start.

Bassey’s 15 rebounds were a career high. Seven of them came on the offensive end.

Though Adebayo packed the box score, Bassey at least made him work for it. Johnson noted a good number of Adebayo’s 13 made field goals came on jump shots.

Heading into Saturday, Bassey had not played in three of the past four games. The Spurs are hopeful Wembanyama will be well enough to return to the floor when the rodeo trip begins Monday in Memphis.

If so, Bassey is likely to return to his spot buried deep on the bench. For a night, however, he made himself useful Saturday.

3. Breaking down the final shot

Though the Spurs defended well for much of the game, they did not field their most tenacious defensive lineup on Miami’s final possession.

Johnson could not use Stephon Castle, the hard-nosed rookie who experienced his first career foul-out on a dubious call guarding Herro with 4:35 to go.

The other possible option was Jeremy Sochan, who did not play well offensively but still seemed to be moving around well on the defensive end. Sochan, however, remained on the bench in favor of Keldon Johnson.

Johnson was the defender nearest Adebayo on the game-ending jumper.

Still, it is a play the Spurs said they would live with.

“Just a mid-range shot I guess we just live with,” Vassell said. “We didn’t want to get it in Tyler Herro’s hands, and we live with that.”
