San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) celebrates after the Spurs 126-119 victory over Memphis in an NBA game in San Antonio, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025. Several Spurs players have stepped up with Wembanyama and Stephon Castle out in recent weeks, giving the team a solid 6-2 record over that stretch.

As the clock approached midnight Tuesday night, a charter flight carrying most of the Spurs lifted off from San Antonio International Airport, bound for Orlando and the start of what will be at least a four-game road trip.

A certain 7-foot-4 Frenchman was not on it.

Victor Wembanyama remained at home, working on his recovery from a calf strain. So too did another prominent starter, guard Stephon Castle, who stayed behind to rehab a hip flexor strain.

If nothing else, that knowledge sapped some of the fun out of the game for Internet sleuths hoping to deduce a timetable for the Spurs stars’ returns.

“No flight tracking necessary,” coach Mitch Johnson said with a laugh.

Johnson did not rule out either player joining the Spurs in the middle of the trip, which includes an NBA Emirates Cup quarterfinals game at the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 10.

If the Spurs win that contest, it is immediately on to Las Vegas for the Cup final four.

“It’s a long trip,” Johnson said. “So we’ll be where it goes.”

For now, however, it means the Spurs’ season goes on without two of their most important players.

Wednesday’s game against the Magic will mark the eighth in a row Wembanyama will miss. It is the seventh consecutive for Castle.

Heading into it, the Spurs have gone 6-2 without Wembanyama and 5-2 without Wembanyama and Castle to keep their overall record at a robust 14-6.

The Spurs added to the undermanned win column Tuesday with a 125-119 victory over Memphis at the Frost Bank Center, in what will be their lone game at home in the span of 27 days.

“It shows the resilience of this group,” guard De’Aaron Fox said. “Obviously, we feel like we have a top-10 guy and then Steph is going to be an All-Star in this league. We’re missing a lot of production, but I think we have a lot of talent in this room.”

Fox has been the Spurs’ most consistent water-carrier since Wembanyama went down, averaging 26.5 points and 6.8 in those contests.

The Spurs have kept winning, however, by becoming more than the sum of their parts.

Or as Fox himself has often put it: “We have a team.”

Tuesday’s win over Memphis provided some prime examples of the Spurs’ teamwork.

Fox had 29 points, but was outdone by forward Harrison Barnes, who threw in 31 points — his most in a Spurs uniform.

Barnes also matched a Spurs-tenure high with seven made 3-pointers.

The Spurs benefited from 15 points off the bench from Dylan Harper, five blocks and rugged interior defense from Luke Kornet, and the most active 18 minutes Jeremy Sochan has logged in weeks.

“Different guys are going to step up to win games,” Barnes said. “Everyone has had the opportunity to come in and impact winning, and that’s going to continue to be a driving force for us for the rest of the season.”

That has been proven time and again over the past two Wemby-less weeks.

Before Tuesday, the Spurs’ most recent victory came at 139-136 at Denver in an NBA Cup elimination game.

Devin Vassell led the way in that one with a season-best 35 points. Julian Champagnie added 25 points and 10 rebounds. Keldon Johnson had 14 and eight.

The collective effort helped the Spurs take down the high-powered Nuggets despite Fox’s lowest-scoring outing since Wembanyama was injured (15 points).

“It’s been proof now, for a quarter of a season at least, that we aren’t solely dependent on one individual,” Mitch Johnson said.

The absence of two of the team’s most high-usage players has created opportunities for players who might not otherwise have had them.

Harper, who missed 10 games with a calf strain of his own earlier in the season, has had the ball in his hands more often than he would have with Castle on the floor.

San Antonio Spurs forward David Jones Garcia (25) walks off the court to a cheering crowd after the Spurs’ 135-126 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025. Jones-Garcia and a bevy of other Spurs players have stepped up as needed with Wembanyama and Stephon Castle out in recent weeks, giving the team a solid 6-2 record over that stretch.

Carter Bryant, the Spurs’ other first-round rookie, has seen an uptick in his minutes as well and undrafted rookie David Jones-Garcia turned around the Spurs’ Nov. 20 win over Atlanta with 12 points and three steals.

“We’re a deep team, man,” Vassell said. “It’s exciting to think we’re just scratching the surface.”

Wembanyama and Castle will be back at some point this month. The pair remained behind at the start of the current road trip to maximize their rehab time in the Spurs’ state-of-the-art training complex.

“When you walk through our facilities and see the resources and what we can get done here, it’s really hard to argue,” Johnson said.

For now, the Spurs’ road trip goes on without Wembanyama or Castle. The team will hope to keep the plane in the air and pointed in the right direction.

No flight tracking necessary.
