Spurs expect Wembanyama, Vassell to return ‘really soon’

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, center, out with an injury, celebrates a team score against the Utah Jazz during the second half of an NBA basketball game in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024.

Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell are expected to return “really soon” from the “minor” knee injuries that have sidelined them the past three games, acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said Thursday.

“Not (sure) quite exactly when, but very soon,” Johnson said.

“Very soon” could mean Saturday night against the Western Conference-leading Golden State Warriors after the Spurs upgraded Wembanyama and Vassell on Friday to questionable for the contest. Keldon Johnson was also listed as questionable with a tight right hamstring.

The Spurs (8-8) improved to 2-1 without Wembanyama and Vassell by rallying from a 20-point second period deficit to defeat Utah (3-13) on Thursday night.

“They are both trending in the right way, working on the court,” Johnson said. “Just need to get that final clearance.”

Wembanyama suffered a bruised right knee in a collision with Anthony Davis in the Spurs’ loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 15. Vassell sat out in Dallas the next night due to injury management following his offseason foot surgery. He was scheduled to return against Oklahoma City on Tuesday, but a sore left knee prevented him from playing.

Barnes enjoys another big scoring night

With Wembanyama and Vassell out, Harrison Barnes is making the most of his increased scoring opportunities.

On Thursday night, the 13th-year forward recorded his season-high for points for the second consecutive game, collecting 25 in 36 minutes. He finished 8 for 13, including 4 for 5 from 3-point range.

In Tuesday’s win over Oklahoma City, he had 20 points in 32 minutes on 6 for 13, including 3 for 7 from beyond the arc.

Before Tuesday’s game, Barnes had recorded just three games in which he took 10 or more shots.

“The beauty of our team is different guys can step up any given night,” he said. “Before these last two games, I was shooting like six shots a game.”

Johnson credited Barnes, 32, with again providing a sense of calm along with the 39-year-old Chris Paul, who finished with 13 points and 10 assists for his team-high seventh double-double.

Barnes also recorded a double-double, his first as a Spur, by grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds.

“Harrison was steady,” Johnson said. “In the first half, he was probably the one guy kind of just keeping us afloat when we felt a little out of sorts. Because of Chris’s presence, and rightfully so, he doesn’t always get the attention for being that steady hand, but he’s kind of secondary in that veteran role for us.”

Bassey continues to make most of opportunity

Charles Bassey is another player making the most of an opportunity created by Wembanyama’s absence.

The 6-foot-11 backup center had 11 points, a season-high eight rebounds and a career-best six blocks in a career-high 27 minutes against the Jazz.

In the three games Wembanyama has missed, Bassey has averaged 23 minutes after averaging just 2.9 over his first six outings.

Among his highlights Thursday: A lob dunk set up by Tre Jones that cut Utah’s lead to 88-82 with 1:07 left in the third.

“His energy has been great,” Johnson said of Bassey.

Johnson was asked if Bassey has earned more minutes even after Wembanyama returns.

“I think there’s probably multiple people” who have earned more playing time," Johnson said.

The Spurs also received another solid outing from Zach Collins, who started his third game in a row at center and finished with 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting in 21 minutes. Since Wembanyama went down, Collins is averaging 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 24.4 minutes.

“We got a few guys out and a few guys stepping up, so I think hopefully the depth will be something we’re going to hang our hat on,” Johnson said.

Barnes praised Bassey, who missed most of last season after suffering a knee injury last December, for staying ready while sitting on the bench behind Wembanyama and Zach Collins.

"I mean, it is not easy playing behind Victor, with what he does offensively, what he does defensively, obviously how many minutes he gets, Barnes said. “So for 11 games or however many games it was to be out of the rotation, not playing, and to come in now to be able to have these type of games to give us this lift, those are big things.”
