Chris Paul took over the fourth quarter Thursday night, and somehow Tre Jones felt like he had seen this before.
As Paul pumped in mid-range jumpers, and doled out assists and directed traffic and willed the Spurs to a 126-118 comeback victory over Utah, Jones was taken back to all the times the 12-time All-Star had done something similar during a sure-to-be Hall-of-Fame career.
Jones’ conclusion?
“It’s much better having him on your side than playing against him,” Jones said.
Paul scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter to help the Spurs rally from a 20-point deficit and knock off the Jazz at the Frost Bank Center.
It was the Spurs’ largest comeback of the season.
Harrison Barnes scored a season high for the second game in a row, pouring in 25 points to go with 10 rebounds.
Zach Collins and Stephon Castle each scored 18 for the Spurs, who were without three top scorers in Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan.
Lauri Markkanen put in 27 points for Utah, which fell to 3-12, while John Collins added an 18-point, 14-rebound double-double.
It was the 39-year-old Paul who got the Spurs over the hump in the fourth quarter. He went 4 of 6 in the frame and gave out three of his 10 assists, always seeming to find a basket when the Spurs needed it.
One three-possession example: Paul threw in a contested 3-pointer over Markkanen, followed by running a pick-and-roll with Castle that resulted in a three-point play for the rookie, then faked a pass to Charles Bassey on a pick-and-roll and tossed in a mid-range jump shot.
By the time that flurry was over, the Spurs were ahead 117-110 going into the final two minutes.

Paul left Thursday impressed with the Spurs’ competitiveness.
“I think from Day 1, the way we approached things during the summer, the way we compete and practice on the plane, if it’s Connect 4, if it’s ping pong, whatever you do, you do it to win,” Paul said. “There’s competitive guys in that locker room.”
As Thursday showed again, Paul is certainly one of them.
Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s victory, which evened the Spurs’ record at 8-8:
1. Paul was born for these moments
Even on the cusp of turning 40, even with a sprained left thumb heavily bandaged, Paul was not going to be denied in the fourth quarter.
“I love close games,” Paul said. “I get frustrated when we do lose close games.”
Paul has been breaking opponents’ hearts in the fourth quarter for a long time. Harrison Barnes, the second-oldest player on the Spurs, calls Paul “one of the great closers in the game that we still have playing.”
The wisdom Paul has accumulated over 20 seasons has come in handy for a still young Spurs team learning what it takes to finish games.
“I know clock management, I know the plays, the shots that I want to get,” Paul said. “The last three, four minutes of a game is a totally different game. You got a package that you want to go to. If your defense sucked all game long, you sort of lock in. That’s what I try to bring to the team.”
It seems to be paying off. With Thursday’s victory, the Spurs improved to 3-3 in crunch-time games after losing a league-high 18 of them last season.
2. Barnes’ impact should not be overlooked
While much of the attention over the offseason was on the arrival of Paul, Barnes has quietly begun to make his mark on the Spurs as well.
For the second game in a row Thursday, Barnes set a season scoring high. Two nights earlier, in an equally stirring win over Oklahoma City, Barnes recorded 20 points.
He did that five better against the Jazz.
“I think the beauty of our team is different guys can step up on any given night,” Barnes said. “Before these last two games, I think I was shooting six shots a game. So I think the coaches just talked about being aggressive.”
Barnes was about all the Spurs had going for them during a dismal first half, pouring in 17 of his points before intermission.
“Probably because of Chris’ presence, he doesn’t always get the attention for being that steady hand,” acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “He was probably the one guy that was kind of keeping us afloat when we felt a little out of sorts.”

3. Once again, Bassey’s energy turns the tide
Wembanyama’s absence has created minutes on the second unit for Charles Bassey. For the second consecutive game, the 24-year-old center made his presence felt.
He had a career-best six blocks against the Jazz, with his energy seeming to lift the Spurs over the hump during a crucial third-quarter surge.
Bassey had three blocks and nine points during the frame, as the Spurs cut what had been a 20-point deficit to four heading into the fourth.
So good was Bassey that Johnson stuck with him as part of the Spurs’ closing lineup in crunch time.
Bassey’s contributions so far have endeared himself to his older teammates.
“It’s not easy playing behind Victor,” Barnes said. “To come in now and be able to have these type of games and give us a lift, those are big things.”
