(Chris Paul)
(Harrison Barnes)
(Julian Champagnie)
(Stephon Castle)
(Zach Collins)
(Charles Bassey)
(Keldon Johnson)
(Tre Jones)
(Blake Wesley)
(Sandro Mamukelashvili)
(Malaki Branham)
(Sidy Cissoko)
(Mitch Johnson)

Grades: San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks – Game #14
The San Antonio Spurs (6-8) lost a road game against the Dallas Mavericks (6-7) on Saturday night. San Antonio faced long odds going into the game due to being without Victor Wembanyama (knee contusion), Devin Vassell (injury management) and Jeremy Sochan (broken thumb).
In the first half, the Spurs remained right in the thick of things. Their defense was sturdy and the offense was doing enough to hang around.
Sadly, the Mavs went on a big run early in the third quarter and the Spurs were never able to form a rally. The second half turned into a cakewalk for Dallas.
Stats: Spurs at Mavericks
Spurs at Mavericks – Final Grades
Chris Paul
This was quite possibly Paul’s least impactful game of the season. Three assists in 25 minutes tells most of the story. Paul simply couldn’t playmake against Dallas’ defense and he wasn’t scoring enough to offset his lack of distribution. Defensively, Paul had a couple of positive moments but it was a struggle on that end too.
Grade: D
Harrison Barnes
Uh, yeah, no, Barnes didn’t do a whole lot this game. He was a step slow on defense, did little on the boards and was only 1-for-6 from the field. To Barnes’ credit, he had a couple three-balls go in and out … but being close isn’t worth a whole lot in the sport of basketball. So far this season, Barnes has been too accepting of being the fifth option on offense.
Grade: C-
Julian Champagnie
It was a tale of two halves for Champagnie. In the first half, he was the leading scorer on either team with 13 points in 14 minutes. In the second half, Champagnie was scoreless and went 0-for-5 from the field. San Antonio falling apart after halftime was partly due to him going ice cold. The only good news in the second half for Champagnie was his defense remained above average despite his shooting struggles.
Grade: B-
Stephon Castle
The good: Castle is now 11-for-23 (47.8%) from three-point range over his last five games. If his three-point shooting is for real, wow, that’d be huge for his development. Against the Mavs, Castle had more great passes, played a lot of stout defense and flashed expert level driving ability. The bad: Castle was a bit loose with the ball. His pass-shoot decision-making was shaky. Defensively, he got burned more than his fair share in one-on-one situations.
Grade: B-
Zach Collins
I hated Collins’ shot-selection from three-point range. He was just jacking them up there — and even airballed two in a row. His passing wasn’t as wise as usual and he tallied five fouls in 26 minutes. He was also getting bodied around in the paint by Dallas’ bigs. The rest of Collins’ evening was fine. He was 6-for-8 from two-point range, hit all eight of his freebies and challenged finishers. His perimeter defense also looked really good during possessions here and there.
Grade: C+
Charles Bassey
With Wembanyama out and the Mavs playing bulky centers, Bassey got his first extended minutes of the season. Given the circumstances, he did well. Bassey was really good on defense. His rim protection was great and he did good work on the boards. While his passing was fine offensively, the rust was plainly obvious when it came to scoring the basketball. All in all, Bassey confirmed his status as a worthwhile third string center.
Grade: B
Keldon Johnson
The good: Johnson was as active on defense as you’ll see him. He was also efforting on the boards and he kept his mistakes to a minimum. His decision-making wasn’t always right but he deserves credit for rarely hesitating. The bad: Johnson had trouble finishing at the rim and some of his attempts were way too adventurous. He missed both of his three-pointers and his stroke looks too long and slow right now. The Spurs were trying to use Johnson like a battering ram on offense but it didn’t work.
Grade: B-
Tre Jones
Jones returned to the floor after getting hurt against this same Mavs squad in the season opener. In 19 minutes off the bench, he struggled to move the needle. Jones hit a three-pointer and made a couple heady passes but his playmaking was nothing to write home about and he appeared to lack some explosiveness. Defensively, I was more impressed. Jones was playing really good help defense and was rarely a liability on the ball.
Grade: C+
Blake Wesley
With Jones back, Wesley is going to have to play really well to remain in the rotation. In Dallas, he had two really good finishes at the rim. His speed on defense was also useful. That said, I wouldn’t say Wesley played well enough to make a good case for his continued inclusion in the rotation.
Grade: B-
Sandro Mamukelashvili
Mamukelashvili’s lack of length and athleticism came into play on a few defensive possessions and a few rebounding opportunities. However, there’s nothing else to complain about how he played on Saturday night. Mamu scored 14 points in only 17 minutes and did so efficiently shooting-wise and without a turnover.
Grade: B+
Malaki Branham
Branham wasn’t shy about calling his own number but he missed five of his six shots from the field.
Grade: C-
Sidy Cissoko
Cissoko shot his first free throws of the season. He missed both.
Grade: Inc.
Mitch Johnson
Johnson utilized smoke and mirrors to help keep the good guys in the game in the first half. Unfortunately, things fell apart after halftime. I liked that he gave Bassey some run. On the other hand, the coaching staff could have done more to try to right the offense. It was painful to watch after Dallas diagnosed what the Spurs were trying to do.
