(Victor Wembanyama)

(Chris Paul)

(Harrison Barnes)

(Jeremy Sochan)

(Julian Champagnie)

评分:A-

(Keldon Johnson)

(Stephon Castle)

(Tre Jones)

(Zach Collins)

评分:A-

(Blake Wesley)

(Malaki Branham)

Inc.

(Charles Bassey)

Inc.

(Sandro Mamukelashvili)

Inc.

(Gregg Popovich)

Grades: San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks – Game #1

The San Antonio Spurs lost their season open by a final score of 120-109 at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks. While the Spurs held the Mavs to 39.7% shooting from two-point range, Dallas hit 19-of-44 three-pointers to ultimately sink San Antonio.

Early on, things were going well for the good guys. After a back and forth first half, the Spurs held a 49-47 lead at intermission.

In the second half, the Mavs exploded on a 16-4 run out of the gates to gain a double-digit advantage. To San Antonio’s credit, the Spurs battled back to get within three points late in the third quarter. Unfortunately, that’s when Dallas went on another run and the Silver and Black were never able to recover.

All in all, the Spurs shouldn’t be too upset with how they played. Their defense looked good in spurts. Their offense sputtered at times but most of the problems looked correctable. The team’s overall effort level was there and they competed.

Spurs at Mavericks – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

Wembanyama’s sophomore season begins with a dud. He looked out of rhythm, which wasn’t totally unexpected following his minimal play during preseason. Against the Mavs, Wembanyama fumbled the ball when met with contact, settled for difficult shots too often and his decision-making in all areas was out of whack. I also thought he could have rebounded better and his rim protection was beneath what we’ve come to expect. Wembanyama still had a couple impressive stretches but he did more harm than good on this night.

Grade: D-

Chris Paul

Paul really helped matters with his passing and his orchestration of the offense. When the Spurs got a clean look, it was usually due to Paul’s doing. Defensively, he battled and he even helped out on the boards. Unfortunately, Paul’s lack of scoring was an issue. The Mavs didn’t respect him much in that regard and he rarely even got into positions to score the ball. At 39, we’ll see if he has the burst anymore to be more than a spot-up three-point shooter.

Grade: C+

Harrison Barnes

After a tepid preseason, Barnes looked good against the Mavs. He carried the offense for a stretch and looked confident both shooting threes and on the move. His smart play on the offensive end was as advertised. Defensively, he didn’t do a whole lot but typically was a force for good when he was involved.

Grade: B+

Jeremy Sochan

Sochan was all over the place — and the results were inconsistent. I liked his physicality in the lane on both ends but sometimes he was too much. He did good getting to the line for seven one-handed attempts and he drained a three on his first attempt from deep. Sochan gave a lot of effort on defense and I’d rate his performance as above average. All that said, slowing up a bit and playing smarter would have helped matters. Being a battering ram isn’t always the answer.

Grade: B-

Julian Champagnie

After a strong preseason, Champagnie continued that high level of play into the regular season. He hit half of his eight attempts from three-point territory and never hesitated when given an opening. He also exhibited some juice off the dribble that we haven’t seen much in his career. Defensively, Champagnie was pretty darn good. He rebounded and he was making plays on that end. If he keeps playing like this, he’ll certainly retain a spot in the rotation even when Devin Vassell is ready to return.

Grade: A-

Keldon Johnson

Johnson got off to a slow start but eventually he was playing at an acceptable level. Even though he’s slimmer, his ability to power through bodies in the paint seems to be as good as ever. That said, Johnson is at his best when he’s making plays off the dribble and not entirely focused on trying to score at the rim. Tonight, his tunnel vision stopped him from being more impactful.

Grade: C

Stephon Castle

The good: Castle’s passing looks like a major, major strength. He makes quick decisions and intuitively knows the right angles when delivering a pass. His one-handed passes on the move were especially impressive. Defensively, Castle looked legit. He had a few fantastic possessions and seems to have all the skills to eventually become elite on that end. The bad: The rookie found out that relying on strength in the paint is a really difficult thing to do in the NBA as a guard. He had some success in doing so but it more often than not led to miscues. Castle also missed both of his three-pointers and neither one looked to be particularly close.

Grade: B

Tre Jones

Jones got the backup point guard minutes and he didn’t really move the needle. He was basically just a placeholder out there. He had a couple quality drives and a few fine passes but he failed to make a true impact. The Spurs need more from Jones if they’re going to be a winning team this season.

Grade: C-

Zach Collins

Collins played his part; there’s really not much to complain about. He rebounded well and threw around his body in the paint. On offense, he remained a threat and knocked down his one shot from downtown. Truth be told, the Spurs usually looked better when Collins was at the five rather than Wembanyama. Hopefully this is one of the few times this season that I’ll be typing that sentence.

Grade: A-

Blake Wesley

I thought Wesley looked good. He utilized his speed to his advantage on both ends. He pushed the ball well in transition and was one of the few Spurs who successfully bent Dallas’ defense. Defensively, Wesley applied pressure and was a pest in passing lanes.

Grade: B+

Malaki Branham

We’re all well aware that Branham isn’t timid about shooting the ball. In his six minuets of garbage time, he hoisted five shots. Thankfully, he hit three of those attempts and looked smooth in doing so.

Grade: Inc.

Charles Bassey

The most important thing about Bassey’s garbage minutes was the fact that he looks really good athletically. Following a torn ACL, avoiding a lost step isn’t always possible. Running, jumping, quick bursts … it looks to all be there for Bassey.

Grade: Inc.

Sandro Mamukelashvili

Mamukelashvili played well in preseason but it wasn’t enough to avoid being relegated to garbage minutes.

Grade: Inc.

Pop

Strategically, I didn’t have any problems with the game plan. The Spurs involved Wembanyama early and often, defended Luka Doncic pretty well, and handled pick-and-rolls about as well as could have been expected. I really liked that Castle was a primary cog in the rotation. That said, Pop opting to have his players barely break a sweat in preseason obviously played a role in San Antonio looking rusty in this season opener.
