(Victor Wembanyama)

评分:A+

(Devin Vassell)

(Stephon Castle)

评分:A-

(Harrison Barnes)

(Julian Champagnie)

(Keldon Johnson)

评分:A-

(Dylan Harper)

(Luke Kornet)

(Carter Bryant)

(Jordan McLaughlin)

(Bismack Biyombo)

(David Jones Garcia)

(Harrison Ingram)

(Mitch Johnson)

The San Antonio Spurs started the regular season with a bang. Behind a staggering performance from Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs thoroughly dismantled the Dallas Mavericks by a final score of 125-92. Wembanyama finished the contest with 40 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks as San Antonio blew the game open in the third quarter and waltzed to the victory in the fourth.

Spurs at Mavericks – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

What the hell did I just witness? Wembanyama kicked off his third year in the association with a spectacular performance. It was spectacular in all facets of the game. Defensively, he shut down the paint, rotated perfectly, challenged shooters on the perimeter and dominated the glass. Offensively, Wembanyama’s mix of power, skill and determination made him an unstoppable 7-foot-5 wunderkind. Instead of looking for threes, the Frenchman stubbornly sought out the best possible looks and the results were jaw-dropping. I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to say this was the best season-opening game in Spurs history. Wembanyama was utterly dominant — all while not turning the ball over and shooting 15-for-21 from the field and 9-for-11 at the line. This is a game that we’ll always remember.

Grade: A+

Devin Vassell

The good: I liked Vassell’s defense. He was attentive off the ball and much more aggressive than usual on the ball. This was the type of effort on D that Vassell played with early in his career. Offensively, he knocked down some difficult, timely shots that helped the Spurs keep the momentum flowing in the right direction. Passing-wise, he missed a couple opportunities but he also saw the floor better than usual. The bad: Vassell’s shot-selection can still get better. Scoring 13 points on 14 shots isn’t exactly the type of efficiency this team needs. At times, his lack of team-centric feel on the offensive end stuck out like a sore thumb.

Grade: B-

Stephon Castle

Castle looked great in his first game of his sophomore campaign. His ability to get downhill and attack the rim with patience and strength is game-changing. Castle finished well at the rim, made a number of great passes off the dribble and kept his intensity high. Defensively, he hounded ball-handlers, played smart help-defense and corralled contested boards. Castle shot poorly from the free throw line (5-for-10) and turned the ball over five times — but other than those two areas, he was outstanding.

Grade: A-

Harrison Barnes

Barnes’ played with more oomph on defense than we saw from him last season. He fought around screens but could have done better work on the boards. Offensively, he took a backseat and failed to convert a few opportunities in the lane. Barnes looked iffy on offense during the preseason and things didn’t change much in the regular season opener.

Grade: C+

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie was blazing hot in the preseason but his looks tonight were limited. To his credit, he remained aggressive on defense and minimized his mistakes on both ends.

Grade: C+

Keldon Johnson

Johnson was quietly a notable part of this win. He provided the Spurs with muscle in the interior. He scratched and clawed on the boards, he finished with brawn in the paint, and he routinely made the right decisions. Efficiency-wise he was really good and he played with more wisdom than usual on defense.

Grade: A-

Dylan Harper

Exciting times, my friends. Harper made his NBA debut and his skill level is blindingly obvious. He’s so damn polished at such a young age that it’s difficult to even imagine how good he can become if he maximizes his potential. Harper started slowly against the Mavs but eventually got it going. His craft in the paint is otherworldly, he has natural playmaking ability and he clearly has a winning demeanor. The rookie made a handful of mistakes tonight but looking at the big picture, the coaching staff has to be thrilled with the flashes of brilliance that were on display.

Grade: B+

Luke Kornet

Early on, Kornet didn’t look that good. He was fouling (including a flagrant foul) and generally just getting in the way. Thankfully, Kornet eventually settled in and was a positive force by the end of the affair. Defensively, he guarded the rim well and kept his head on a swivel. Offensively, he set mean screens, made heady passes and was physical in the paint. Kornet obviously has rough edges to sort out but it looks like he’ll be a valuable piece to this puzzle.

Grade: B-

Carter Bryant

Bryant didn’t score in his rookie debut but there were reasons to be intrigued. His movement defensively lived up to the hype even going against NBA athletes. He got turned around a couple times but Bryant is clearly a big, long, athletic specimen with a sky-high ceiling on that end. Offensively, he was robotic at times but he remained relatively composed, all things considered.

Grade: B-

Jordan McLaughlin

In a bit of a surprise, McLaughlin was in the main rotation. He didn’t play much but the coaches turned to him when Dallas went to a twin point guard look. I thought McLaughlin did well. He moved well without the ball, got the team into sets and competed on the defensive end. For deep bench depth, he holds value because he understands the game at a high level and is a threat from three-point land.

Grade: B

Bismack Biyombo

Biyombo got five minutes in garbage time as he played the role of the team’s third center.

Grade: Inc.

David Jones Garcia

Jones Garcia took advantage of his garbage minutes by doing what he does best: scoring the ball and bending the defense.

Grade: Inc.

Harrison Ingram

Since Ingram has to shoot it to make it in this league, it’s good to see that he hit his first three of the season.

Grade: Inc.

Mitch Johnson

Johnson deserves some credit for Wembanyama getting so many fruitful touches. The offensive sets already look much improved from last season. I liked that Johnson trusted his players who were in foul trouble (there were times he could have pulled Wembanyama, Harper and Kornet but stuck to his guns). The rotation made sense. I was skeptical after seeing McLaughlin hit the floor before Bryant — but it worked out well enough.
