Spurs iron men Julian Champagnie and Keldon Johnson finally got a night off.

With Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell back in action after getting Monday night off to rest when the Spurs lost 119-109 at Utah, Champagnie, Johnson and Luke Kornet watched Wednesday night’s 123-103 victory over Phoenix in street clothes.

Coach Mitch Johnson said it was particularly important to give Champagnie and Johnson a rest after they played in all 82 regular season games and every playoff game last season.

Champagnie also didn’t miss a game during the 2024-25 season. The last time he sat one out was March 3, 2024, meaning he will enter the season with a streak of 185 consecutive games played, the second-longest active streak in the league.

In winning the 2026 Sixth Man of the Year award, Keldon Johnson became only the second NBA player in the last decade to play in all 82 games without a start.

“They don’t take games off during the regular season, so it’d be nice to give them a game (off) when it doesn’t actually count and do the same thing for Luke," Mitch Johnson said. "He’s been doing a good job getting in shape.”

The Spurs expect to have everyone available for the preseason finale against Sacramento on Friday night at the Frost Bank Center.

“The expectation for Friday at the end of the preseason is have as many healthy bodies as possible to have a quote unquote best rehearsal,” Mitch Johnson said.
