(Julian Champagnie)

To hear Spurs forward Keldon Johnson tell it, he’s never had a bad day at work.

The thought seems almost inconceivable to one of the NBA’s most effervescent players.

“I enjoy coming here and being with my teammates,” Johnson said. “We enjoy playing with each other and being in the gym with each other and things like that. So the days that you don’t feel like it, once you get in here and you feel the energy, it kind of goes away.”

Johnson’s durability has been on display this season, as the seventh-year pro is closing in on playing all 82 games for the first time in his career.

The 26-year-old Johnson logged a career-best 78 appearances heading into Monday’s contest against Philadelphia at the Frost Bank Center.

He aims on playing in each of the Spurs final four games to complete his iron man campaign.

“Definitely if I am able to, I will,” Johnson said. “Fortunately, I’ve been healthy this year. If I’m healthy and able to be out there with my teammates like I’ve been this whole season, then I definitely will be.”

Johnson is one of two Spurs still with a chance to turn in an 82-game regular season. Julian Champagnie is the other.

Champagnie, Harrison Barnes and Chris Paul each logged 82 appearances last season.

Before that, the Spurs had not had an all-82 game player on the roster since 2018-19, when Patty Mills and Bryn Forbes both accomplished the feat.

“That’s a real skill that probably doesn’t get discussed enough,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. ”Some of these guys just show up and clock into work every single day and night.”

Johnson’s contributions to the Spurs’ rise to the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference have come in more than the games-played column.

The NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidate is averaging 13 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting a 52.5%, a career best over a full season. He entered Monday having totaled 1,013 points off the bench the season, the most in Spurs history.

“The role embracement from him started earlier than everybody else on this team,” Mitch Johnson said. “We asked him to embrace a role before the team was ready and was built for him to star in that role. For a young player to do that is almost unheard of.”

Johnson is pushing toward 82 games despite a nagging left shoulder injury that bothered him for several weeks in March.

He says he is “in a good spot” with that ailment now.

“It’s been a long season, so obviously there’s bumps and bruises,” Johnson said. “Nobody’s 100% right now, but I’m feeling good and I’m just ready finish out strong, and get ready to playoffs.”

The work that goes into an 82-game season probably goes unappreciated, Johnson said.

Even if it does not always feel like work to him.

“If you’re available and able to play, then to us it’s important,” Johnson said. “Whether it’s overlooked or not, I think the main thing for our group is that we love being with each other. We love playing with each other each and every night. And if we could be out there with our teammates, we’ll be there.”

Spurs’ 3-point king has 76ers to thank

Champagnie celebrated his first day as the Spurs’ single-season 3-point king with a visit from his former team, the 76ers. With six 3-pointers in Saturday’s loss at Denver, Champagnie brought his season total to 192, eclipsing Danny Green’s mark of 191 set in 2014-15.

It would not have happened had Philadelphia not waived him in February 2022, giving the Spurs a chance to claim Champagnie off waivers.

“I’m super grateful for my whole journey,” the 24-year-old Champagnie said. “I wouldn’t change it. … I’m happy I got cut. It was probably the best thing that could have happened for me, so shoutout to Philly.”

Waters deems indigenous clinic a success

Spurs guard Lindy Waters III got a chance to peek inside the Spurs’ former practice facility, as part of the youth basketball camp he hosted Sunday for native and indigenous players.

“A lot of history,” Waters said of the building on Spurs Lane where the team headquartered until 2023. “A lot of history. You got to see the banners. It still has that old smell in it.”

Waters was on site to discuss a period of history even older than the Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili era.

A citizen of the Kiowa tribe and also part Cherokee, the 28-year-old Waters put on the clinic through his foundation and in collaboration with American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions (AIT-SCM) and Nike N7.

The event was about more than dribbling and passing.

“We got to break up into smaller groups and have more deep, meaningful conversations about not only basketball but things (the kids) want to pursue in life,” Waters said.

The clinic came a day before the Spurs hosted Native American Heritage Night during Monday’s game against the 76ers. Waters, who joined the Spurs as a free agent last summer, said he appreciated the club’s willingness to celebrate his culture.

“We all have different stories, different backgrounds,” Waters said. “Everybody’s history is different. The Spurs do an amazing job at telling everybody’s stories. They give us a platform to tell our stories and continue to educate.”
