Keldon Johnson credits Spurs medical staff for iron man status
Keldon Johnson heaped praise on the Spurs medical staff for helping him and teammate Julian Champagnie play in all 82 regular season games.
“We have an amazing medical staff and they really made it a priority and sacrificed to put us in a position to be available each and every game,” said Johnson, the sixth man of the year candidate who had 18 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes in Sunday’s 128-118 loss to Denver in the regular season finale. “So shout out to them.”
In a post-game interview with the San Antonio Express-News, Johnson listed all the medical staffers by name, including head athletic trainer Will Sevening and director of performance therapy Marilyn Adams.
“I feel like our whole medical staff sacrifices so much to make sure we can compete at a high level each and every night, and it doesn’t go unnoticed,” Johnson said. “It’s one of the main reasons why we are going into the postseason pretty healthy. They really, really, really take care of us. So it’s a testament to them. Without them, this wouldn’t be possible. I just want to give them their flowers because they put our health at the forefront.”
Johnson achieved iron man status for the first time in his seven-year career. It was the second year in a row for Champagnie, making the fourth-year pro the first Spur to play in all 82 games in consecutive seasons since Patty Mills in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Johnson and Champagnie were among 18 players in the league to play in all 82 games.
“We’ve had a lot of guys miss games and people step up and we’ve had to play a little bit of musical chairs with some roles and responsibilities and whatnot, so to have those consistent puzzle pieces is a huge part of why we are where we are,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
The league’s other iron men are Desmond Bane, Mikal Bridges, Bruce Brown, Toumani Camara, Bub Carrington, Donte DiVincenzo, Kris Dunn, Jeremiah Fears, Javonte Green, Jay Huff, Oso Ighodaro, Sion James, Jake LaRavia, Brandin Podziemski, Jamal Shead and Reed Sheppard, the New York Times reported.
Johnson is the only player in the league this season to play in all 82 games off the bench. He led all reserves in win shares (6.4) on the second-best team in the NBA and finished second in league reserves in points (1,081) and rebounds (442) while becoming the first player in Spurs history to score 1,000-plus points off the bench.
