Nikola Jokic had another dominant day against Victor Wembanyama and the French national team in a FIBA exhibition Sunday. This time, however, Wembanyama and Les Bleus got the last laugh.
Jokic, a three-time NBA MVP, with the Denver Nuggets, starred with 34 points and 13 rebounds.
The French, however, fought off a late charge to score a dramatic 91-90 victory over Serbia in a friendly match before a sold out crowd at Palais des Sports in Orleans, France.
Wembanyama, the 22-year-old Spurs superstar, contributed 18 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks to the French triumph.
It was a better performance than Wembanyama offered in the first friendly meeting between the pair of international titans last Friday in Belgrade, in which the French captain had 10 points and six turnovers in Les Bleus’ 90-87 defeat.
Jokic flirted with a triple double in the first game, and was close to unstoppable again Sunday.
In Sunday’s rematch, Wembanyama got help in the form on 20 points from Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot and 19 from Sylvain Francisco. Jaylen Hoard, a French-born power forward who played collegiately at Wake Forest, won the game for Les Bleus with a go-ahead layup at the buzzer.
After splitting a pair of exhibitions with Jokic and the Serbians, Wembanyama’s squad will next turn its attention to this week’s FIBA World Cup qualifying matches against Slovenia and Sweden.
With a 5-1 record so far in qualifying action, the French are in first place in Group D.
Having won a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic with Wembanyama at the fore, Les Bleus will be considered one of the favorites at next year’s World Cup in Qatar.
