Jeremy Sochan trying ‘not to be cancer’ with Knicks
Jeremy Sochan’s stint with the Spurs didn’t go the way he wanted, but the little-used New York Knicks forward said before Game 1 of the NBA Finals he remains grateful for his three-plus seasons with the organization.
“Coming into the city, just straight away, feeling the culture of the fan base in Texas, it was great,” Sochan told the San Antonio Express-News on Wednesday. "Basketball-wise, it was great. I was coached under coach Pop (Gregg Popovich), had a great connection with him, relationship with him, learned a lot, as you know played a lot of different places, positions.
“It was a lot of ups and downs, but I think it’s who I am and it’s helped me a lot through the journey.”
The Spurs released Sochan, 23, on Feb. 11 after he fell out of coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation due in large part to the emergence of rookie forward Carter Bryant, who the club drafted 14th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft last summer.
Looking for wing depth, the Knicks signed Sochan on Feb. 13 for the remainder of the season after he averaged 10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 25.3 minutes per game across 212 games for the Spurs in three-plus seasons after they drafted ninth overall in 2022.
Despite being stuck at the bottom of New York’s bench, Sochan has maintained a positive approach.
“Staying ready, being the best teammate I can be,” he said of his approach. “Not all 18 guys can play on the court, so you have to accept that part and not be a cancer to the team. So the moment I came here, it felt cool. It felt natural to be here and be around and help the team out whatever way I can. And, yeah, it’s been good.”
Sochan said it was a 'weird feeling" when the Knicks rolled up to their team hotel in San Antonio earlier this week.
“That’s where I stayed when I got drafted, so it’s a full circle moment,” he said. “But, no, it’s cool. My family’s here. They live here, so just to be around (again), it’s pretty cool.”
Sochan said the Spurs reaching the Finals “didn’t really surprise” him.
“I think my time there this season, we were a really good team,” he said. “They have a really strong team in the Western Conference and I was there when we played (and beat) Oklahoma many times in the space of two weeks or whatever it was. I don’t think it’s a crazy surprise.”
Johnson was asked before he’s confident Sochan will eventually find a home in the NBA.
“I hope so,” the coach said. “The NBA is a grueling league, and so sometimes it’s timing, sometimes it’s a fit, sometimes it’s circumstance. Hopefully, he gets an opportunity to take advantage of it.”
