Former Spur Jeremy Sochan agrees to sign with Portland Trail Blazers

San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) and New York Knicks forward Jeremy Sochan (20) go up to the net during the second quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
The Spurs didn’t see much of Jeremy Sochan when they fell to the New York Knicks in five games during the 2026 NBA Finals.
Knicks coach Mike Brown praised the former Spur after New York’s historic 107-106 come-from-behind win in Game 4 for his 41 seconds defending Victor Wembanyama at the end of the first quarter and for his two-minute stint on the court late in the second period.
"We had different guys step up at different times,” Brown said. “You take a guy like Jeremy Sochan. We threw him in the game and he gave us four to five (actually three) great minutes. I don’t even know the last time Jeremy even played longer than 30 seconds. It was just a heck of a job of keeping himself ready.”
But other than filling in for that brief time due to Karl-Anthony Towns getting into foul trouble, Sochan didn’t have an impact in the series.
Next season, though, the Spurs could face the pesky forward they selected ninth overall in the 2022 NBA Draft quite a bit more.
A free agent, Sochan has agreed to a one-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers, according to his agent, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Saturday.
Citing a league source, the Blazers Edge reported, the deal is non-guaranteed, so Sochan, 23, will have to compete for a roster spot at training camp.
Sochan joins his third NBA team with career averages of 9.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 24.1 minutes per game entering his fifth NBA season. The move returns the Baylor alumnus to the Western Conference, which the Spurs won last season after letting him go in February.
Sochan chose to sign with New York over nine other teams because he viewed playing for the Knicks as an “opportunity” to “grown and blossom.”
That opportunity never materialized. He averaged just 6.9 minutes per game during 16 regular-season appearances and 3.3 minutes per game during eight postseason appearances.
Sochan fell out of Spurs coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation last season due in large part to the emergence of rookie forward Carter Bryant, the 14th overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft. Sochan’s poor 3-point shooting — he’s shooting 28.6% from beyond the 3-point line for his career — was also a factor.
“It’s tough. In my whole career even looking past the NBA I’ve never really been sitting on the bench and getting DNPs. So you go through a process of questioning why or what’s happening,” Sochan said before signing with the Knicks, per the New York Post.
“It can get stressful. But at the end of the day, I’m from England, where basketball is not big. So I know my worth. I know what I can bring to the team, and I’m blessed that the organization here (in New York) has seen that. And I’m super excited to get a fresh slate and show what I can do.”
The Blazers are hoping Sochan can play like he did for the Spurs in 2023-24 when he averaged 11.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in over 27 minutes a night in a career-best 74 games.
If that’s the case, the Spurs may be facing him a lot in 2026-27.
