SAN ANTONIO – The New York Knicks listed Mitchell Robinson as questionable Tuesday for Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs after the center underwent surgery to address a broken finger last week.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday that Robinson remains “resolute” in his desire to play in Game 1 but that the 7-footer still must be officially cleared by the Knicks’ training staff. Robinson, who fractured the fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand, participated in light shooting and dribbling drills during an open practice at NBA Finals media day Tuesday.

Knicks coach Mike Brown wouldn’t tip his hand as to Robinson’s availability in advance of Game 1, which will be held at Frost Bank Center on Wednesday. “He did some individual stuff [Monday],” Brown said. “I’m about to talk to our medical people to see what he can do [Tuesday].”

Robinson, who wore a black wrap over his shooting hand and right wrist during Tuesday’s open practice, hasn’t explained how or when he sustained the injury, and he wasn’t available to reporters on media day. Charania reported Tuesday that the injury occurred at Robinson’s home in advance of New York’s first Finals appearance since 1999.

Robinson, 28, has appeared in 13 of the Knicks’ 14 playoff games this year, averaging 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds in 14.2 minutes per game off the bench. He missed Game 2 of New York’s Eastern Conference semifinals sweep of the Philadelphia 76ers due to illness.

Robinson played a key role in New York’s NBA Cup championship win over Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs back in December, posting four points, 15 rebounds and two blocks in 18 minutes.

San Antonio’s matchups

Winning the possession battle

Where have you heard this before? One critical factor for the Spurs throughout the postseason has been reducing turnovers and securing the glass. Turnovers crushed the Spurs in both losses to the Knicks in the regular season. They also got crushed on the glass. San Antonio won’t stand a chance if they are giving New York extra possessions by turning it over and letting them pound the offensive boards. At the same time, San Antonio’s defense is smothering and is at its best when it is creating easy offensive looks in transition. The Spurs can gain an advantage in the possession battle by forcing giveaways, even if the Knicks aren’t a turnover-prone squad (12.4 turnovers per game in the playoffs).

Three-point shooting

The Spurs really haven’t faced a team that has consistently made it rain on them this postseason. The Knicks have been shooting the three-ball well in the postseason, knocking down 40% of their deep shots. When he can take the top off the defense, it opens a lot of stuff up for the Spurs around the rim.

Sources: Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson available for NBA Finals

New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson is expected to be available for Game 1 of the NBA Finals at the San Antonio Spurs after fully participating in practice Tuesday following right hand surgery, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.

Robinson, who fractured the fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand, is listed as questionable for the game Wednesday night, New York’s first Finals appearance since 1999. He participated in light shooting and dribbling drills during an open practice Tuesday and wore a black wrap over his shooting hand and right wrist.

Robinson, 28, has appeared in 13 of the Knicks’ 14 playoff games this season, averaging 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds in 14.2 minutes off the bench. He missed Game 2 of New York’s Eastern Conference semifinal sweep of the Philadelphia 76ers due to illness.

The Knicks are seeking their first NBA championship since 1973.
