3 Takeaways as Wembanyama, Spurs flop in Game 5

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) gestures after a play during the third quarter of Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
OKLAHOMA CITY — One of the most magical seasons in Spurs history is suddenly and officially on the brink.
Two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander pumped in 32 points, Alex Caruso spearheaded a bounce-back bench night and Jared McCain stepped up in his first playoff start as Oklahoma City rang up a 127-114 victory in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday.
With the win, the Thunder moved a game away from a return trip to the NBA Finals. The Spurs, meanwhile, are one loss away from the end of an unexpectedly deep playoff run.
“I don’t think we had a good game at all, honestly,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said. “I know we can be a lot better, and we don’t have no choice.”
Oklahoma City leads the series 3-2 heading into Game 6 on Thursday at the Frost Bank Center.
Caruso scored 22 points to lead an OKC bench unit that had gone M.I.A. two nights earlier in San Antonio, when the Spurs rolled to a 103-82 victory that evened the series.
McCain, who made the start with Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell injured, added 20.
Stephon Castle had 24 points to lead the Spurs, with Julian Champagnie chipping in his playoff high with 22.
All-Star center Victor Wembanyama labored en route to 20 points, going 4 of 15 from the field. He made 12 of 12 foul shots to inflate his total.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said the team needs to find a way to get Wembanyama more involved in Game 6.
“He’s got to take more than 15 shots, even with the free throws, Johnson said. “He’s going to have to score more than 20 points for sure.”
Asked if Wembanyama’s relative passivity Tuesday was about his aggression or the Spurs’ game plan, Johnson said it was “a combination of both.”
In the end, the Thunder gave a championship-level response to Sunday’s Game 4 whipping.
Late in the third quarter, Oklahoma City had surpassed its point total from Game 4, building a lead that got as high as 20. The Spurs closed to within eight points in the fourth quarter, but the hole proved too deep.
Now they face a pair of do-or-die games, beginning Thursday in San Antonio.
“We just want to come in and try to be the desperate team,” guard De’Aaron Fox said of the Spurs’ Game 6 approach. “That’s pretty much it.”
Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s defeat, that put the Spurs’ season fully on the ropes:
1. Wither Wemby?
It wasn’t necessarily that Wembanyama was bad on Tuesday. He just wasn’t up to the lofty standard the Spurs are going to need him to hit if they are going to survive a series against the defending champions.
To review Wembanyama’s box score lines in the Spurs’ two victories in the series: He had 41 points and 24 rebounds in the Spurs’ double-OT triumph in Game 1. He registered 33 points in the Spurs resounding Game 4 victory.
If the Spurs are going to rally to win the series, they are going to need two more Wembanyama performances in that ballpark.
Of course, the same could be said for the Thunder and their star. OKC is 3-0 in the series when Gilgeous-Alexander scores at least 26, including a pair of 30-point games.
The playoffs are often about a team’s best player being the team’s best player. The next two games could come down to which All-Star rises to the occasion.
2. Thunder offense back at home
After logging 82 points in Game 4 for their worst offensive performance in more than five years, the Thunder offense was back at home in the Paycom Center.
Even with key ball-handlers Williams and Mitchell out with injury, Oklahoma City rediscovered its groove in front of the home crowd.
Before the game, OKC coach Mark Daignault noted the team’s offensive outage in Game 4 came on the heels of a pair of 120-plus point games.
“None of that carried over from Game 2 and 3 to Game 4,” Daignault said before tipoff. “And nothing from Game 4 carries tonight. You take the lessons and now it’s a blank canvas.”
With Gilgeous-Alexander leading the way, the Thunder got back to their all-over-the-roster levels of production that typified their previous pair of wins.
Chet Holmgren was more aggressive than he had been all series, scoring half of his 16 points in the first quarter.
The Spurs are undefeated in the series when holding OKC to less than 120 points. They are 2-0 when keeping OKC below that number. Their path to extending the season likely begins there.
3. Spurs are fighting against math now
There is no understanding how killer Tuesday’s loss was to the Spurs’ chances of advancing to the NBA Finals.
In NBA history, the winner of Game 5 in a tied best-of-seven series goes on to advance 82% of the time. That has been true in the past eight such series.
This season marks the fourth time the Spurs and Thunder have played to a 2-2 tie in a playoff series. In each of the previous three occasions, the team that won Game 5 finished the series in Game 6.
None of them made it to Game 7.
That is the history the Spurs will look to buck Thursday, when their goal will be simply to get the series back to Oklahoma City for a grand finale.
“(It is) sink or swim,” Keldon Johnson said. “Your back’s against the wall. You got to win. By any means, whatever we got to do to get to win.”
