Spurs guards De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper battled back from injuries to play in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals, but they clearly weren’t their usual dynamic selves.
“I’m sure they’re beat up. They’re giving us everything they got,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said after the 123-108 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night at the Frost Bank Center.
“It’s commendable, the fight they have,” Johnson added. “It’s that time of the year when guys are playing with more than bumps and bruises, so just tip the cap and ask as much as they can give.”

But neither was 100 percent and the Spurs couldn’t keep pace with the deeper, more physical Thunder, who lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 heading into Game 4 on Sunday night.
“It pains me to see them in pain,” said Victor Wembanyama, who led the Spurs with 26 points. “I trust they are going to be healthy soon and come back. They should take care of their health.”
Fox made his debut in the series after missing the first two games due to a sprained right ankle left over from the second-round series with the Minnesota Timberwolves. “It’s definitely tough,” Fox said. "I feel like it was a play that could have been avoidable, but it is what it is. Every team’s dealing with something, every team’s dealing with injuries. So you chalk it up to, that’s the name of the game. But obviously it is disappointing not being able to be 100 percent.
“But like I said, I’m able to be out there, so that’s all that matters to me right now.”
Fox said he was able to play Friday after going through “a lot of treatment, a lot of different things.”
“Basically, trying everything except shooting my ankle up,” he said. “I just want to be out there.”
His teammates applauded the grit the 28-year-old two-time All-Star displayed.
“You can see he’s not 100 percent,” said forward Devin Vassell, who had 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals. “It just shows us he’s a warrior and he wants to win, wants to compete. I think he played a great game with how limited you could see that he was and he didn’t complain at all. Obviously, when that play happen when Dort fell on his ankle, I was concerned. But he came right back out like a trooper and was ready to go.”
Harper also showed his ability to fight through adversity in returning from a sore right adductor that forced him to leave Game 2 for an early shower in the third quarter.
“It’s definitely something you could feel,” the rookie said of his injury. “But I think I kind of played with the same burst, (or) I at least tried to play with the same burst and with that same intensity I’ve been playing with.”
But after scoring 24 points in Game 1 and exiting Game 2 with 12, he managed just six points on 2 of 7 from the field in 17 minutes in Game 3.
“I think it was more just trying to get to my spots, really,” said Harper, who came into the game averaging 14.4 points in the postseason. “That’s the biggest thing. Just shots weren’t going in. Just need to regroup.”
Johnson said Saturday he expects both Fox and Harper to be “ready to go” for Game 4.
“Those guys are giving us all they got and I commend them and tip my cap because they’re competing their ass off and they’re not 100 percent,” the coach said.
