(De’Aaron Fox)
(Stephon Castle)
评分:A-
(Devin Vassell)
(Julian Champagnie)
(Luke Kornet)
评分:A-
(Dylan Harper)
评分:A+
(Carter Bryant)
评分:A+
(Keldon Johnson)
(Harrison Barnes)
(Mitch Johnson)

Playoff Grades: San Antonio Spurs at Portland Trail Blazers – Game #3
The San Antonio Spurs were able to snatch a key road win in Game 3 by a final count of 120-108. With Victor Wembanyama out due to a concussion, the Spurs found themselves down by double-digits in the third quarter. Thankfully, San Antonio dug in, battled back and evened the game heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final stanza, the Spurs locked down on defense and got big shots from Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle specifically. It was a memorable outing and one that could help this team make a run in the postseason.
Stats: Spurs at Blazers

Spurs at Blazers – Final Grades
De’Aaron Fox
It wasn’t the most aesthetically-pleasing game for Fox. He was cold from the field a lot of the game, had trouble handling the ball at times, got into early foul trouble and wasn’t much of a factor on defense. The Spurs were looking to him to guide the ship but he simply couldn’t — Portland’s defense was too difficult for him to handle. Two bright spots: I thought Fox competed at a high level. That fire helped the Spurs survive. Secondly, he hit some shots down the stretch to put the Blazers to bed.
Grade: C-
Stephon Castle
Castle had a pretty darn good outing. He poured in 33 points in 34 minutes and was super efficient from the field (10-for-18) and from the line (10-for-11). Perhaps most importantly, Castle made the Blazers pay for leaving him open by hitting 3-of-4 three-point tries. Defensively, I also thought he was above average. All that said, Castle wasn’t quite as good as those scoring numbers suggest. He only had two boards, his playmaking wasn’t anything special (five assists compared to four turnovers) and he sometimes tried to do too much. Castle put a lot of pressure on his shoulders and he ended up delivering — but the youngster still has to discover the balance between carrying the squad and doing too much. All in all, though, it was a commendable performance.
Grade: A-
Devin Vassell
The good: Vassell was 3-for-7 from deep, pulled down contested boards to finish with seven, passed the ball better than usual and was super active on the defensive end. His level of effort and athleticism has gone up since the start of the playoffs. The bad: Vassell was 1-for-5 inside of the arc, mostly due to questionable shot selection. He also missed his only free throw attempt. While I appreciated his fearlessness on offense, better decision-making would have helped the cause.
Grade: B-
Julian Champagnie
Champagnie hit 2-of-4 three-pointers and is now shooting 60% from deep in the series. That marksmanship has been very much needed. He also rebounded well in Game 3 and his defense was solid. His lack of top tier athleticism has become more noticeable in the playoffs, however. In this series, Champagnie sometimes looks a step slow and, thus, it’s difficult for the coaching staff to keep him out there for long stretches.
Grade: B-
Luke Kornet
With Wembanyama sidelined, Kornet did a great job filling in. He finished with 14 points, ten rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 30 minutes. He also shot and made his first three-pointer of the season. Offensively, his screening, passing, rebounding and rolling to the rim all gave San Antonio real value. Defensively, Kornet is moving his feet well, rebounding well and protecting the rim well. The Spurs would be in a world of hurt without him right now.
Grade: A-
Dylan Harper
Wow. This was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen by a rookie in a Spurs uniform. When things looked bleak in the third quarter, it was Harper who rose up and carried the good guys out of purgatory. He hit 4-of-5 three-point attempts, he was a monster driving to the hole and the depth of his bag was on full display. His quick hands, sneaky athleticism and elite toughness were all on display as he pulled down ten big rebounds. The bottom line is that Harper looked like a future superstar who will elevate his game in the playoffs. That’s perhaps the most important storyline of the entire season.
Grade: A+
Carter Bryant
Wow, part two. You look at Bryant’s line and you wouldn’t suspect much. He was 1-for-5 from the field, including 1-for-4 from downtown. He also passed up another handful of open shots. However, don’t let those numbers fool you because Bryant was awesome in Game 3. Defensively, he was spectacular. From individual defense to help defense to protecting the cup, he was a legitimate game-changer. Bryant was without a doubt San Antonio’s best defender. Even though he’s a raw rookie, it’s clear he’s already ready for this stage — at least on the defensive end. Offensively, Bryant was better than his statistics suggest. He handled point guard and playmaking duties at times, something he never did in the regular season. His passing was actually really damn good. His hustle on the offensive glass was also something that turned the tide. Bryant’s energy and courage on offense seemingly led directly to half of the team’s three-point makes. He was a ball of energy and helped break Portland. Hell of a job.
Grade: A+
Keldon Johnson
The good: Johnson hit his only three-point attempt. He pulled down a few ferocious boards. He passed the ball better than usual. Defensively, he was more locked in than usual and was able to make some plays. The bad: Johnson was 0-for-6 on two-pointers. His kamikaze drives just aren’t working. I don’t know if it’s the increased physicality of playoff basketball or Portland’s rim protectors but Johnson’s bread-and-butter offensive plays are coming up empty. I would love to say it’s fixable but I’m not sure.
Grade: C
Harrison Barnes
Barnes was pretty pathetic in his six minutes. There were a couple rebounds he decided to not fight for that helped spark a run by the Blazers. Add in a goose egg on the offensive end and he couldn’t have played much worse. In total, he finished with nothing other than a missed three-pointer in his six minutes of action.
Grade: D-
Mitch Johnson
Great coaching by Coach Mitch in this one. Leaning on Harper when he had it going didn’t take a genius but leaning on Bryant was really impressive. Two rookies on the court in money time is something almost no coach would do — but he did it and it was the difference in the game. He also put Barnes on ice, which was a needed maneuver that many coaches would fail to do. Coach Mitch stuck to the game plan, exhibited courage in his rotation and got a big playoff win on the road.
