Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama gets head start on resting before playoffs

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) reacts as he watches his team take on the Denver Nuggets at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, April 12, 2026. The Spurs fell to the Nuggets, 128-118.
Victor Wembanyama got a head start on resting up for the playoffs when the Spurs ruled him out of Sunday night’s regular season finale because of a sore left ribcage.
The league MVP candidate and overwhelming favorite to win defensive player of the year watched the 128-118 loss to Denver on the bench in street clothes at the Frost Bank Center. He’s expected to be back on the court Tuesday when the Spurs begin practicing for Game 1 of their first-round playoff series on April 19.
Wembanyama hurt his ribs when he collided with Paul George in last Monday’s win over over Philadelphia. After sitting out Wednesday’s victory over Portland, he returned to record 40 points and 13 rebounds in just 26 minutes in a 139-120 rout of Dallas on Friday night in which Wembanyama became eligible for NBA awards by satisfying the league’s 65-game rule.
“He’s doing well but just a little sore and (we) felt it was the appropriate decision (sit him)," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said before Sunday’s game.
Wembanyama finished his third NBA season averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds and a league-best 3.1 blocks per game, making him just the sixth player in league history to reach those marks in the same season.
The most recent was Shaquille O’Neal for the Los Angeles Lakers in 1999-2000. Wembanyama is the only player to reach those thresholds while averaging fewer than 30 minutes per game (29.2).
Johnson said he thought Wembanyama’s body held up “tremendously” throughout the course season after he played in only 46 games last season due to a season-ending blood clot in his right shoulder that doctors discovered after the All-Star break.
“I think he’s the strongest, the best in shape he’s been in since I’ve been around,” the coach said. “He’s fought through some games just in terms of, not injury, but physicality, the toll of a really competitive high-level game.”
Spurs guard Stephon Castle returned to action Sunday after missing the previous two games in a row due to a variety of nagging injuries. In nearly 29 minutes against the Nuggets, he nearly recorded his sixth triple-double of the season, finishing with 10 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.
“I feel good,” he said after the game. “I feel like my conditioning was not too far off. My body feels good, so I wasn’t out there limping or anything. That’s the most important thing.”
In addition to Wembanyama, the Spurs are also expected to welcome backup center Luke Kornet back to the practice court on Tuesday after he sat out Sunday’s game with right shoulder soreness.
Rookie guard Dylan Harper left Sunday’s game in the fourth quarter because of an injured left thumb. Johnson didn’t have any details about the extent of the injury afterward, but Harper told the San Antonio Express-News after the game he jammed it.
