Spurs have no rest days planned for Victor Wembanyama down the stretch

NEW YORK — During the Spurs’ trip to the New York two years ago, Victor Wembanyama went viral when he popped up in Central Park to play impromptu chess matches against strangers.
Don’t expect a repeat this year, even with the Spurs afforded two free days between games in the Big Apple.
“You don’t have to be on the lookout for anything,” Wembanyama said.
With the mileage of the Spurs’ rodeo road trip taking its toll on Wembanyama’s 7-foot-4 body, the All-Star center planned a more restful use of his downtime before a Sunday afternoon spotlight showdown against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
In Thursday’s 126-110 win in Brooklyn, Wembanyama went 3 of 9 from the field on his way to 12 points. It marked his third consecutive game converting worse than 40% of his field goals.
“I had to push through that one,” Wembanyama said after the victory over the Nets. “We’ve got two days now and we’re at the end of a crazy road trip. We’ve got to recover like crazy.”
As he takes aim at reaching the 65-game threshold required to remain eligible for NBA postseason awards, Wembanyama has not had a game off since Jan. 3.
With 23 games remaining, Wembanyama can miss four more and still reach that magic number.

Wembanyama acknowledges the Spurs’ travel schedule — which for him also included a week in Los Angeles for the All-Star game — might be catching up to him.
Over the past three games of the Spurs’ season-best 11-game winning streak, Wembanyama is shooting 12 of 37 from the floor, including 3 of 15 from the 3-point stripe, while averaging 15 points.
“I think he’ll be just fine,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “His (All-Star) break wasn’t as long as everybody else’s. We’re almost 60 games in. We’ve been on the road quite a bit. When we weren’t on the road, he was on the road. It’s part of the life we live.”
Johnson said Wembanyama’s health remains a “never-ending, constant conversation” with the team’s medical staff.
“It’s a delicate balance,” Johnson said. “We know he wants to play every second. We’re not going to risk anything while doing that.”
Even so, Johnson did not indicate Wembanyama would be due a game off any time soon.
He was hopeful two days off between Thursday’s win in Brooklyn and Sunday’s game against the Knicks would suffice.
“I hope everybody takes advantage of that in a way that is most appropriate for them,” Johnson said.
Spurs set for Sochan reunion
Sunday’s game will mark the Spurs’ first chance to see Jeremy Sochan in his new Knicks uniform.
The Spurs reached a buyout agreement with the 22-year-old forward and former top-10 draft pick just before the All-Star break, allowing him to sign with New York thereafter.
Sochan has appeared in five games with the Knicks, averaging 1.2 points and 1.4 rebounds in 7.1 minutes per contest.
His ex-teammates in San Antonio are wishing Sochan the best.
“You want everybody to get an opportunity to show what they can do and show the work they put in,” Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said. “This league is what it is. Everybody doesn’t get that opportunity. You just have to seize every moment you can.”
