How the Spurs plan to manage Wembanyama’s ‘angry’ ankle for the playof

DENVER — The way Spurs coach Mitch Johnson describes it, Victor Wembanyama’s sore right ankle is not being friendly to him these days.

“That ankle is still angry at him,” Johnson said.

Wembanyama sat out Thursday’s 118-99 victory at the Los Angeles Clippers to rest his recalcitrant right ankle, which has been bothering the All-Star center off and on for the past few weeks.

Wembanyama has generally played through his discomfort, and often spectacularly.

Wednesday in San Francisco, Wembanyama was feeling well enough to rattle off 41 points and 18 rebounds in a resounding victory at Golden State.

Johnson indicated Wembanyama’s rest day in L.A. owed mostly to the two-games-in-two-nights scenario.

“The back-to-back makes it more of a discussion in terms of recovery and lack of time from the previous game,” Johnson said.

With Wembanyama unavailable Thursday, backup Luke Kornet received his 24th start of the season. Kornet himself sat out the win in San Francisco as part of a planned rest day during the final back-to-back of the season.

He provided eight points and six rebounds against the Clippers.

“He was phenomenal,” Johnson said. “He was a presence in the paint on both ends.”

Despite Thursday’s absence, Wembanyama remains in solid shape to reach the 65-game threshold to remain eligible for NBA awards at season’s end.

He has logged 62 appearances this season, needing only to play in three of the Spurs’ final five games to meet the league’s requirement.

Wembanyama is expected back Saturday when the Spurs face Denver in a matinee at Ball Arena, though Johnson said that angry ankle will be something to manage between now at the start of the playoffs.

“We don’t have any more back-to-backs, so that helps him with more recovery time,” Johnson said. “It’s something we’ll definitely be mindful of so we can get everybody as healthy as they can be down the stretch.”

Harper’s Hail Mary ‘all skill:’ Rookie guard Dylan Harper capped a raucous first half in Los Angeles with a 42-foot heave at the second-quarter horn that sent the Spurs into intermission with a 68-44 lead.

With four second left in the half, Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard missed a mid-range jumper. Julian Champagnie snagged the rebound for the Spurs and fired ahead to Harper, who unleased a shot from just beyond halfcourt as time expired.

Swish.

“That wasn’t luck,” Harper said. “That was all skill.”

Harper is only somewhat joking.

“Every pregame I practice it,” Harper said. “I don’t know about (off of) one leg. But every day I practice halfcourt shots.”

Harper finished Thursday’s game with 19 points off the bench, none more memorable than the longest field goal of his NBA career so far.

Johnson hits 1,000 bench points: With 13 points Thursday, reserve forward Keldon Johnson became the first player in Spurs history to total 1,000 off the bench in a single season.

The Sixth Man of the Year candidate has logged 1,003 bench points this season, breaking his own franchise record of 979 established last season.

Johnson’s willingness to sacrifice off the bench is not lost on the Spurs’ youngest player.

“The role he’s taken and how he thrives in his role is the best thing ever for us,” Harper said. “He’s the glue. A thousand points, we see it every night. He contributes in a big way.”
