“Oui(法语:是的)……

Why Wembanyama’s injury comes at the second-worst time for the Spurs

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) grabs his left side following a collision with Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George (8) during the second quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, April 6, 2026. He sat out in the second half due to a left rib contusion.

Luke Kornet replaced Victor Wembanyama in the Spurs’ starting lineup in the second half Monday. Then he replaced Wembanyama at the postgame interview podium.

Asked by some wiseacre if he was prepared to go the full Wemby and take a few questions in French, the Texas-born Kornet leaned into the microphone and went for a bilingual pun.

“Oui … are not prepared,” Kornet said.

No matter the language, it turns out replacing Wembanyama is no easy task, either on or off the floor.

With the All-Star center knocked from a 115-102 victory over Philadelphia with a left rib contusion, the Spurs could be forced to face that challenge at the second-worst possible time.

The worst possible time would be in two weeks, as the team readies for its first playoff series since 2019.

Until then, Wembanyama’s sore rib cage is sure to be the most talked-about body part in all of San Antonio.

His status for the final three games of the regular season remains uncertain, beginning with Wednesday’s contest against Portland at the Frost Bank Center.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson did not have much in the way of a Wembanyama update after Monday’s victory, the Spurs’ 60th of the season.

“At halftime, I was told he wasn’t coming back,” Johnson said. “Honest to God, I haven’t heard anything else up to this point.”

Wembanyama was injured with 10:47 remaining in the second quarter, when he collided with the 76ers’ Paul George while both attempted to corral an errant pass.

After remaining on the court for several minutes, Wembanyama proceeded to the locker room to be examined by the team’s medical staff.

He returned before the end of the quarter, missed a pair of free throws and scored eight more points, then did not return to the arena bowl for the second half. When it comes to guessing at a prognosis for Wembanyama, Johnson’s views those final five minutes of the second quarter as a silver lining.

“It would be a positive that he felt like he could come back and he played the last four or five minutes of the half,” Johnson said.

Spurs guard Stephon Castle said he spoke to Wembanyama after the game.

“He looked like he’s doing good,” Castle said.

Wembanyama’s injury marred what was otherwise a red-letter day for the Spurs, who cemented the franchise’s eighth 60-win season one year after posting a 34-win campaign.

Castle led the Spurs with his fifth triple-double (19 points, 13 assists, 10 rebounds), while rookie guard Dylan Harper added 17 points off the bench.

Wembanyama put up an efficient 17 points and three blocks in 16 minutes before retiring to the locker room with injury.

“I didn’t see what happened, so just hoping he’s doing all right,” Castle said. “I know he would want us to stay focused on the game, but we were thinking about his wellbeing.”

The overriding goal for the Spurs now is to ensure Wembanyama makes it to the first round of the playoffs intact. Complicating matters, Wembanyama must play at least 20 minutes in one of the Spurs’ remaining three games to reach the 65-game threshold required to remain eligible for NBA awards.

Because Wembanyama logged more than 15 minutes against Philly, that game will count toward his total.

Generally, players must play 20 minutes for a game to count. A player is allowed two exceptions of under 20 minutes, provided he plays in at least 15 minutes in those games.

After Monday, Wembanyama has used both of his exceptions.

As such, Wembanyama’s bid for his first Defensive Player of the Year award and All-NBA honors — not to mention his place in the MVP race — could come down to his ability to gut out 20 more minutes with a bruised rib between now and the April 12 regular-season finale against Denver.

Of course, none of this was on the Spurs’ minds at the moment they saw Wembanyama sprawled out on the court in the second quarter Monday.

It is no exaggeration to say their playoff lives flashed before their eyes.

“Playoffs will start in two weeks, and we want to be as healthy as possible,” guard De’Aaron Fox said. “That’s the way that the NBA works. Sometimes it’s not the best team. Sometimes it the team that’s more healthy, less beat up.”

Until then, the Spurs will turn to the 30-year-old Kornet as short-term Wembanyama insurance. Kornet ended Monday’s game with 10 points and three rebounds in 22 minutes.

The 7-foot-1 big man said he is game for whatever is needed while Wembanyama recuperates.

“I really kind of do the same as usual,” said Kornet, whose team is 11-5 with Wembanyama absent this season. “Obviously, just changes kind of rotations and minutes a little bit, but I feel like in terms of what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to play, it’s all pretty consistent.”

Filling in for Wembanyama on the court should prove a tough enough challenge for Kornet.

When it comes to filling in for Wembanyama on the postgame interview podium, Kornet doesn’t stand a chance.

“Obviously he’s multilingual and he has an accent that makes the English kind of hit even better,” Kornet said. “Also, it’s less exciting to talk about screening and rolling and offensive rebounds. So I’ll try to block more floaters into the backboard and see if that helps.”

The only question that matters for the Spurs now: Will Wembanyama be at full strength by the time the playoffs begin?

As Kornet might say on behalf of the Spurs, oui … certainly hope so.
