pic.twitter.com/d7mQfnwCFH

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) 2026

pic.twitter.com/Jid1jWNs7A

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) 2026

pic.twitter.com/GInen6vIhC

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) 2026

Seventy seconds into Monday’s game, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson had seen enough.

Chicago forward Matas Buzelis had just blown through the heart of the Spurs’ defense to give the Bulls a three-point lead, and Johnson called a timeout to get his team refocused.

It worked well enough.

With Victor Wembanyama dominating the paint for his highest scoring night of the season, the Spurs stampeded to a 129-114 victory at the Frost Bank Center.

Wembanyama scored a season-best 41 points to go with 16 rebounds and three blocks as the Spurs won for the 25th time in their past 27 games. It marked Wembanyama’s fourth 40-point outing of the season.

Stephon Castle chipped in 21 points and 10 assists for the Spurs.

The victory was the Spurs’ ninth in a row, and their fifth straight to come by double digits. Shaking off a ragged start against the short-handed and woeful Bulls, the Spurs closed the first half on a 20-6 run to take a 17-point lead into intermission.

They controlled the game from there.

Former Spurs guard Tre Jones led the Bulls with 23 points in his first game at the Frost Bank Center as a visitor.

Leonard Miller had 21 points and Collin Sexton produced 20 off the bench for Chicago, which dropped to 29-46.

Here are three takeaways from Monday’s victory, which improved the Spurs to 57-18 as they embark on their final road trip of the regular season beginning Wednesday at Golden State:

1. An obvious winner to French big man battle

Monday represented a reunion for a pair of French basketball stars.

Wembanyama and Bulls center Guerschon Yabusele were teammates on the French national team that claimed a silver medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The fact the 6-foot-7 Yabusele was the best matchup for the 7-4 Wembanyama was not optimal for Chicago.

Yabusele got the starting nod with the 6-11 Nick Richards sidelined by an elbow sprain.

Wembanyama opened the game in attack mode and stayed there, scoring the Spurs’ first bucket by posting up Yabusele on the right block.

By the end of the first quarter, Wembanyama already had 10 points on 10 shot attempts.

After seven minutes of court time, Wembanyama had a double-double. It marked the quickest double-double since the NBA-ABA merger in 1973-74.

By game’s end, Wembanyama had posted a season-high 27 shot attempts en route to his season-high scoring total. He made 17, with the majority of those tries came from layup-dunk range.

All in all, Wembanyama offered an inhospitable welcome to an old friend.

2. Spurs battered Bulls on boards

Part and parcel to the Bulls’ lack of size, the Spurs didn’t just win the rebounding battle Monday.

They dominated it.

The Spurs pulled down 55 boards compared to Chicago’s 35. Sixteen of the Spurs’ rebounds came on the offensive end, resulting in 28 second-chance points.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, on Victor Wembanyama’s 41-point night in a win against the Bulls: “I thought he wanted to set a tone, and he did, obviously. He did a good job of getting to the rim, getting the paint and getting to his spots while also playing with a good pace.” pic.twitter.com/Jid1jWNs7A

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) March 31, 2026

In addition to Wembanyama’s double-digit night on the glass, Castle added eight rebounds to flirt with a second consecutive triple-double.

Devin Vassell added seven rebounds to atone for a 2-for-9 shooting performance, while reserve guard Dylan Harper chipped in six.

Wembanyama has been the ringleader of the Spurs’ recent resurgence on the glass, topping 15 rebounds in four consecutive contests. It matches David Robinson and Tim Duncan for the second-longest such streaks in team history.

3. Spurs draftees get revenge, of sorts

It was a good night for a pair of Bulls players originally drafted by the Spurs.

The most heralded return was that of Jones, a second-round pick in 2020 who spent 4 ½ seasons in San Antonio before being dealt as part of the De’Aaron Fox deal in February 2025.

Jones finished his first game as a visiting player at the Frost Bank Center with a team-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting.

Another former Spurs’ pick – technically – added 21 off the bench for Chicago. That would be Leonard Miller a second-rounder from the 2023 draft class that included Wembanyama.

That selection was part of a draft day deal that sent Miller immediately to Minnesota, who traded him to Chicago last month.

The night was not as productive for yet another former Spurs draftee, Rob Dillingam, who the Spurs took for Minnesota in the first round in 2024.

Dillingham scored six points and was 3 of 12 from the field.
