MIAMI — A well-rested Stephon Castle had a strong all-around game for the Spurs in their 136-111 pounding of the Heat on Monday night after missing the last two games with what the team called tightness in his right hip.

In 23 minutes, the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year had 19 points, seven rebounds (three offensive), six assists and two steals to help the Spurs win their sixth in a row and sweep the two-game season series with the Heat.

“I was just eager to get back,” Castle said. “Obviously, what I had going on wasn’t serious, more for just rest. So, I didn’t feel like I missed too much of a step.”

Castle said it’s “pretty important” for him and his teammates to “try to keep our legs fresh for what we want to be a long postseason.”

“These games still matter to us,” he said. “We got goals for the rest of the season. But, yeah, just trying to keep everybody as fresh as possible.”

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said Castle, the team’s top perimeter defender, “picked up where he left off.”

“He had some turnovers early, but I thought he was sharp as well, getting to the paint, getting off the ball, not playing in the crowd,” Johnson said. “Love the seven rebounds, three offensive. That’s an element that is much needed for our group. … It creates more opportunities offensively and then also allows him to rebound and push on a defensive rebound. So, very impactful when he rebounds like that.”

Devin Vassell also returned for the Spurs after missing one game with what the team called right hamstring tightness. In 21 minutes, he had six points, four assists, two rebounds and a steal.
