When the calendar flips to March in the NBA, playoff-bound teams begin to apply the final polish in anticipation of a long and deep postseason run.
Based on what happened Sunday at the Frost Bank Center, that could be bad news for the Houston Rockets. It could be amazing news for the Spurs.
Behind a balanced and pass-happy scoring effort, the Spurs blew past the Rockets 145-120, turning in one of their best offensive games of the season against a Houston squad built to win with defense.
Victor Wembanyama led the way with 29 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. He was one of six Spurs players to reach double figures in scoring, a list that also included Stephon Castle (23) and De’Aaron Fox and Keldon Johnson (20 apiece).
Dylan Harper scored 19 points and Julian Champagnie chipped in 11 as the Spurs set a season high for points scored against Houston
In what was billed as a potential playoff preview, the Spurs passed out a season-best 38 assists, shot 58% from the field, made 52.5% of their 3-pointers and led by as many as 27 points.
Kevin Durant and Amen Thompson each posted 23 points to lead the Rockets, who trailed for the final 35 minutes and 30 seconds of the night.
Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s victory, the Spurs’ 16th in their past 17 games:
1. A Spurs-Rockets series would be a fun bloodbath
With Sunday’s victory, the Spurs won the season series against the Rockets 3-1, earning the head-to-head tiebreaker when it comes to playoff seeding.
Not that the Spurs are likely to need it.
At 47-17, the second-place Spurs are seven games ahead of Houston in the loss column. Sunday’s result, meanwhile, pushed the Rockets a half game behind Minnesota and into fourth place in the West.
Assuming Houston can right the ship and stick in third – a significant “if” at this point – the Spurs and Rockets could meet in the second round.

If that happens, the paramedics might have to be on call. As has been the case any time the Rockets and Spurs meet, Sunday’s game was something of a bloodbath.
It was a ballet of holding and grabbing and grappling and pushing and shoving. At one point, Durant complained – good naturedly – about the Spurs’ constant use of triple teams.
The teams combined for 49 fouls and 59 free-throw attempts. Officials could have called so many more.
Even when the game got in into the mud, the Spurs gave the Rockets as good as they got, which is a big reason they won.
2. Spurs cash in on Rockets’ carelessness
Turnovers weren’t as much of a bugaboo Sunday as they have been all season for the Rockets, the second-most generous team in the league when it comes giving the ball away.
When Houston did cough it up, however, the Spurs made them pay.
The Rockets committed 12 turnovers, below their average of 15.7 per game. The Spurs converted those miscues into 25 points, which happened to equal their final margin.
Reed Sheppard was responsible for a third of the Rockets’ turnovers with four. Alpren Sengun had five.
The final seconds in the first half exemplified the Spurs’ opportunistic defense.
Trapped near halfcourt, Durant overthrew a cross-court pass intended for Dorian Finney-Smith into the front row with 4.1 seconds remaining.
A few ticks later, Wembanyama buried a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to the top of the arc to give the Spurs a double-digit lead at intermission, 69-57.
The Rockets didn’t know it, but their night by all intents was over.
3. Vassell contributes without a field goal
Devin Vassell entered Sunday on absolute fire since the All-Star break, making 53.6% of his shots over all and 52.5% of his 3-point tries in the previous nine games.
The sixth-year pro finished the game against the Rockets without a field goal, going 0 of 6.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson singled him out for praise anyway.
Vassell did a lot of little things to contribute to victory Sunday. He grabbed five rebounds. He had five assists. He blocked a shot. He slid into the team defensive scheme seamlessly. He was aggressive enough to offense to earn six free-throw attempts, making five.
The way the Spurs are constructed, there will be some nights role players go crazy in the points column and some nights they don’t.
The Spurs work best when those players are doing those little things.
