HOUSTON — The Spurs celebrated Gregg Popovich’s 77th birthday by gritting out a “pounding the rock” type of victory Wednesday in Houston.
Victor Wembanyama scored 28 points with 16 rebounds and five blocks as the Spurs overcame a 16-point deficit in the first half to trounce the Rockets 111-99 at the Toyota Center.
De’Aaron Fox added 18 points for the Spurs, who pummeled Houston 27-13 in the fourth quarter.
The game represented a complete script flip for the Spurs’ most recent trip to Houston last week, when they blew a 16-point lead, scored only 14 fourth-quarter points and lost 111-106.
Amen Thompson had 26 points to lead the Rockets, who also got 25 points from Kevin Durant.
The Spurs did not take their first lead of the game until the 2:05 mark of the third quarter, when Dylan Harper slipped for a drive that put them ahead 79-78.
Down 86-84 headed to the fourth, the Spurs did not allow the Rockets their first points of the frame until a pair of Durant foul shots with 7:47 to play.
Houston did not record its first field goal of the fourth quarter until a Tari Eason basket with 5:57 to go.
With the victory, the Spurs improved to 32-15, holding on to second place in the Western Conference. Houston dropped to 28-17.
Here are three takeaways from Wednesday’s revenge victory:
1. Wemby passes toughness test
Wembanyama provided a quite a bounce back from his most recent visit to the Toyota Center, when he toiled through one of the toughest shooting performances of his career.
Eight days earlier, Wembanyama was 5 of 21 from the floor, 0 of 7 from 3-point range and mustered only 14 points.
Give Houston a bit of credit. Even as Wembanyama waxed them, the Rockets made him work for every point.
Houston continued its habit of using an array of players – Sengun, Thompson, Tari Eason – to defend Wembayama, and send him hurtling toward the court.
At times, it felt as if Wembanyama was bouncing off the floor more often than the ball did.
Wembanyama’s toughness showed in his constant trips to the foul line. He made 12 of 15 attempts, testament to the physicality he dished out as well as absorbed.
2. Bench unit turned the tide
The Rockets made their first eight shots of the night en route to building their big first-half lead.
Give the Spurs’ reserve unit credit for turning the game around.
Their bench outscored Houston’s 38-14, giving the Spurs a decisive boost.
It was a remarkable margin, given coach Mitch Johnson used a shortened bench until garbage time. Only three Spurs reserves registered points. Keldon Johnson had 17, Harper added 16 and Devin Vassell logged five.
Only two bench players scored for the Rockets, with Reed Sheppard giving them nine points and Clint Capela tallying five.
The Spurs have boasted about their quality depth all season. They probably don’t win Wednesday without it.
3. Castle unlocks Spurs’ defense in fourth
Two tactical adjustments led to the Spurs’ dominating defensive performance in the fourth quarter.
One was moving Wembanyama onto Thompson, which prevented the rim-rattling Rockets guard from making his patented forays into the paint.
That move worked. Thompson — who to that point had been the Spurs’ primary source of frustration — finished the game by going 1 of 7 in the fourth quarter.
Mitch Johnson could only make that adjustment, however, because of Stephon Castle.

The 6-foot-5 guard was able to take over the Sengun assignment and hold his own. Sengun was 0 for 5 in the fourth.
When he wasn’t on Sengun, Castle was called upon to hassle one of the top 10 leading scorers in NBA history in Durant. He went 1 for 4 in the final frame.
After the game, Mitch Johnson called Castle’s night’s work on the defensive end an “All-Defense” type of performance.
His versatility proved vital in the Spurs’ lock down fourth quarter.
