HOUSTON — Julian Champagnie was hot early, but Reed Sheppard sizzled when it counted most.
Sheppard scored 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, Alperen Sengun nearly had a triple-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists, and the Rockets overcame a 16-point second period deficit to down the Spurs 111-106 on Tuesday night for their biggest comeback of the season.
Playing 11 minutes in the final frame, Sheppard hit 4 of 7 from the field, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range.
Champagnie scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the first half. He was 8 of 16 from 3-point range, but the Spurs as a whole shot just 28% (14 of 50) from beyond the arc and 39% overall (41 of 105) from the field.
Houston outscored the Spurs 51-36 in the second half after trailing 70-60 at halftime. The Rockets won the fourth quarter 29-14 to improve to 26-15 and even the season series at 1-1 with two games remaining.
The Spurs hit just 7 of 28 (25%) field goal attempts and missed all 13 of their shots from downtown in the fourth.
“Houston did a heck of a job the whole second half, ramping up their physicality, ramping up their level of aggression,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
The Spurs fell to 30-14 after winning three in a row.
The opening tip was delayed nearly 30 minutes after the Spurs’ Stephon Castle broke one of the rims by hanging on to it after a dunk attempt.
The Rockets played without Fred VanVleet (knee) and Steven Adams (ankle).
Here are three takeaways from the first game of a two-game road trip for the Spurs that ends Thursday night at Utah:
1. Rockets defense frustrated Wemby
Throwing a variety of aggressive-minded defenders at Victor Wembanyama, the Rockets limited him to just 14 points in 30 minutes. He made just 5 of 21 from the floor and was 0 for 7 from deep.
“Houston’s played this brand of defense since we’ve had Victor, so I don’t think it’s anything new,” Johnson said. “It’s hard to play against. Our whole team across the board, we got rushed, we got pushed off our spots.”
Wembanyama had 10 rebounds but finished without a block, only the third time that’s happened all season.
2. Champagnie was on fire — again
The Spurs opened the season in need of a 3-point threat. Time and again, Champagnie has proved he’s up to the task.
Champagnie’s eight 3s were the most he’s had since he canned a franchise-record 11 against New York on New Year’s Eve en route to a career-high 36 points.
It was only the second time this season Champagnie has led the Spurs in scoring and his first time on top since the 134-132 win over the Knicks.
It was the sixth time this season he’s finished a game with five or more 3s.
3. Castle playing through pain
Castle grimaced for about a minute or two after his heavily wrapped sore left thumb got inadvertently bumped by Josh Okogie in the third quarter.
Rather than head to the bench until the pain subsided, the 2024 Rookie of the Year fought through it and even canned a 3-pointer a few minutes later. In 35 minutes, he finished with 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
“He’s obviously a tough kid,” Johnson said.
