Wemby opens up about deep vein thrombosis scare

“I didn’t know how long I was going to be out for,” Wemby said. “For a while, I allowed myself to feel totally vulnerable and defenceless.”
Victor Wembanyama, 22, might be on his way to earning his place among basketball gods and legends — but in an intimate interview with Love magazine, the Spurs star revealed he’s just as vulnerable as any mere mortal.
The candid talk between Wemby and reporter Reggie Ugwu was part of the publication’s “S/S 26 Issue,” published online Friday. In it, the French native discussed his emotional reaction to his February 2025 deep vein thrombosis diagnosis.
That vulnerability came into sharp focus when he recalled the troubling moment he learned about the sometimes-fatal blood clotting condition: “When I first learned the news, I broke down,” he told Ugwu.
According to previous Express-News reporting from columnist Mike Finger, Wemby had been feeling “sluggish” on the court leading up to his February 2025 diagnosis. At the time, he reportedly chalked it up to a slow recovery from the flu. However, after nearly pushing himself to his limit, Wemby hit a proverbial wall.

World center Victor Wembanyama, of France, runs back after scoring during the NBA All-Star basketball game against the USA Stars Sunday, Feb. 15, 2026, in Inglewood, California.
“The All-Star Game last year was the worst I had ever felt on a basketball court in my life,” he told the Express-News. “I mean, I had maybe 5% of blood flow in my right arm.”
Soon after his return from the All-Star break on Feb. 20, 2025, Wemby announced the diagnosis that would take him out for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season: “I didn’t know how long I was going to be out for,” Wemby told Ugwu. “For a while, I allowed myself to feel totally vulnerable and defenceless.”

However, instead of allowing himself to sink further into that feeling, he quickly switched his perspective to see the setback as a new chapter. “I pivoted my mind and started looking at it as a challenge,” he said. “If this is my lottery ticket in life, I’m going to do everything that I can to get the most out of it.”
After enlisting a team of medical experts to aid in his recovery — and taking a few kung fu pointers from masters at a Shaolin monastery — the Spurs player is now back on the court with a new appreciation for the game.
“I’m not trying to take the game for granted,” Wembanyama said in his Feb. 19 statement, “because I’ve seen that it can end very quickly.”
