PHILADELPHIA — One of the more remarkable streaks in the NBA came to a halt Tuesday when Harrison Barnes did not dress out for the Spurs’ game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Barnes has been scratched from the contest at Xfinity Mobile Arena with left ankle soreness.
It will mark the first outing Barnes has missed since Dec. 4, 2021, while with Sacramento, ending his consecutive games streak at 364.
“It’s one of those where you wonder if he’s ever going to miss a game,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “At some point, he probably had to.”
The 33-year-old Barnes woke up from his pregame nap in Philadelphia with sore left ankle, Johnson said.
“Hopefully it’s nothing serious,” Johnson said.
It was serious enough to put Barnes in street clothes for the first time in his Spurs tenure.
Heading into Tuesday, Barnes’ iron man streak was the second-longest in the league behind New York’s Mikal Bridges’ 615.
Spurs forward Julian Champagnie is the new owner of the league’s second-longest streak at 163 consecutive games played.
Earlier this season, Barnes snapped a streak of 775 consecutive starts that spanned a decade.
Before Tuesday’s game, Johnson saluted Barnes for his durability during his now-defunct streak.
“It speaks to the preparation that he does before he goes into the game,” Johnson said. “It speaks to the recovery and the process he puts in after the game. He’s a consummate pro. It’s a heck of a run that he had. I suspect he will start a new streak.”
