Spurs salute Harrison Barnes’ now-defunct iron man streak

San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes (40) signals to a teammate while warming up for the game against the Milwaukee Bucks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026.

For Devin Vassell, the funny feeling began in the pregame layup line Tuesday, continued after the opening tipoff and into the first timeout.

The Spurs were on the floor at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, playing an NBA basketball game.

And Harrison Barnes was not.

“When we got here, I didn’t know he wasn’t going to play,” Vassell said. “Then you don’t see him. Definitely not used to it.”

After waking up from his afternoon nap, Barnes reported swelling in his left ankle. For the first time since Dec. 4, 2021, the veteran forward needed a night off.

Barnes watched from the locker room as the Spurs completed their nine-game rodeo road trip with a 131-91 dismantling of the 76ers.

For the 33-year-old Barnes, it meant the end of the NBA’s second-longest active iron man streak at 364 consecutive games. New York’s Mikal Bridges owns the longest at 616.

“It was a heck of a run that he had,” coach Mitch Johnson said of Barnes. “I’m sure he’ll start a new streak pretty soon.”

With Barnes missing Tuesday’s game, Spurs forward Julian Champagnie became the new owner of the league’s second-longest streak with 163 games played.

It is unclear if Barnes will be available when the Spurs return home to face Detroit on Thursday.

Earlier this season, Barnes moved into a bench role, snapping a string of 775 consecutive starts that spanned a decade.

Before Tuesday’s game, Johnson saluted Barnes for his durability during his now-defunct streak.

“It speaks to the preparation that he does before he goes into the game,” Johnson said. “It speaks to the recovery and the process he puts in after the game. He’s a consummate pro.”

Even so, Barnes’ teammates were disappointed to see his streak end.

“I told HB, just sub in and sub out real quick for that record,” guard Dylan Harper said. “We all know if he could have played, he would have played.”

Rookie makes most of added opportunity

The biggest beneficiary of Barnes’ absence was rookie forward Carter Bryant, who filled the newfound opening in Johnson’s rotation. Bryant had been used sparingly since the All-Star break, logging single-digit minutes in four of seven appearances leading to Thursday.

The Arizona product made hay of his increased opportunity in Philadelphia, scoring 11 points and grabbing nine rebounds in 26 minutes. Bryant also swished three 3-pointers.

“Early on he was trying to feel his way into the game, which is not going to be good for him and this stage of his career,” Johnson said. “After that, I thought it was the best game he’s had.”

Plumlee’s Spurs debut still on hold

Having signed a deal that would keep him with the Spurs through the end of the season, backup center Mason Plumlee was inactive for the sixth consecutive game Tuesday.

It is uncertain when the 35-year-old journeyman will be ready to join the active list. Plumlee is still ramping up to full basketball activity after undergoing groin surgery in December as a member of the Charlotte Hornets.

“I think we’re getting there,” Johnson said. “We’ll continue to take it day-by-day. He’s not going to show up and play 28 minutes. There’s a certain level of comfortability and rhythm and knowledge of what we want to do (he needs). We don’t want to put him in a bad place.”

Initially inked to a 10-day contract Feb. 17, Plumlee has yet to appear in a game for the Spurs.
