Spurs’ Harrison Barnes impresses in return from injury

San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes (40) dribbles the ball around Denver Nuggets guard Bruce Brown (11) at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

Spurs forward Harrison Barnes returned in style Thursday night from the left ankle impingement that ended his iron-man streak.

In his first game back after missing five in a row, the 14th-year pro came off the bench to score 20 points and grab seven rebounds in 27 minutes during Thursday night’s 136-131 loss to Denver.

Barnes’ streak of 364 straight games played ended March 3 in Philadelphia due to swelling in his ankle. At the time, it ranked second only to New York’s Mikal Bridges run of 616 consecutive games.

“It was swelling I couldn’t get down,” Barnes said. "That’s what it was at shootaround. I went back to the hotel and had some swelling and couldn’t get it down before the game. We’ve been trying to manage it since.”

Barnes said the ailment built up over time. In Philadelphia, he missed his first game since Dec. 4, 2021, when he was with Sacramento.

“We play a lot of games," he said. "Things accumulate over time. Different things flare up. You try to do as best of a job as you can at managing it.”

Barnes showed no signs of rust against Denver, hitting 6 of 10 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers.

“He looked great. He gave us a huge lift,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.

Barnes said it was difficult to watch the team play without him.

“You want to play for your teammates,” he said. "You want to be out there and continue to build toward the postseason. It’s nice to be back. It would have been nicer to win tonight.”
