3 takeaways as Devin Vassell’s 28 points lead Spurs past Pistons

DETROIT — The Spurs more than measured up in a major measuring stick game against an Eastern Conference bully.

Devin Vassell pumped in 28 points, Victor Wembanyama had a hard-earned 21 points, 17 rebounds and six blocks while overcoming a tough shooting night, and the Spurs beat the East-leading Detroit Pistons 114-103 on Monday night.

“That was a good test,” Wembanyama said.

Julian Champagnie added 17 points for the Spurs, who improved to 41-16 with their ninth straight win.

It’s the Spurs’ longest winning streak since they won nine in a row late in the 2018-19 season, which was also the last time they made the playoffs.

Vassell hit 10 of 14 from the field, including 7 of 11 from distance to tie his season high for most 3s. He started the game with a hot hand, hitting the three 3s in the first two minutes.

“He kind of willed us to the win tonight,” said Spurs guard Stephon Castle, who had 16 points and 11 assists. “Just him being able to space the court, make the right plays, turn down a couple (of shots) to make an extra pass even when some of us wanted him to keep shooting. Dev’s been great for us all year.”

Jalen Duren had 25 points for the Pistons (42-14), who had a five-game winning streak snapped in their first home game in 17 days. With Castle leading the way, the Spurs held Cade Cunningham to 16 points on miserable 5-of-26 shooting after he entered the game averaging a team-best 25.5.

“His game-plan execution and competitiveness while being physical and trying to move his feet and show his hands were excellent,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said of Castle.

The Spurs, who led 57-55 at the half and by 83-75 after three quarters, gained a 90-75 lead after starting the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run.

Wembanyama hit just 6 of his 16 shots from the field. But he came up big with his rebounding, including eight on the offensive end, and defense after he entered the game needing a block against the Pistons to have recorded at least one rejection against all the other 29 NBA teams.

“That’s what it’s going to take to beat teams like this,” Johnson said. “We can’t hang our hat on shot making or offensive creation or trying to score, and I thought he did a great job of not allowing that to deter him, putting his energy into the right spots and all other facets of the game,” Johnson said.

Here are three takeaways from the first game of a five-game road trip that includes games against four of the East’s top six teams:

1. The Spurs valued every possession

The Pistons entered the game as the league’s best at forcing turnovers, with opponents averaging 17.4 per game against them.

The Spurs coughed up the ball 16 times, but they did their best to value each position for the full 48 minutes, something they struggled with earlier this season.

It was a performance that also underscored what Johnson said before the game about Castle, who finished 11 assists against four turnovers despite being hounded by the Pistons.

“The consistency of his decision-making and processing of pattern recognition (has improved), which is hard when you are driving the car that fast and that hard at times,” Johnson said of Castle, who struggled with turnovers early in the season.

2. Spurs pushed back against Pistons’ physicality

Hard-nosed Detroit manhandled the Spurs at times, but the No. 2 team in the West pushed back.

Most notably, Keldon Johnson confronted Cunningham after he pushed down Castle to pick up an offensive foul late in the first half.

“It’s not about being a tough guy, it’s about being there for your brothers,” Johnson said.

Whatever it was, it was a good sign for a team that has been criticized at times this season for playing too soft.

“There were a few times that there was a physicality, a contact, a touching sequence or moment, and I thought we responded very appropriately at times,” Mitch Johnson said.

3. Spurs showed poise from deep

A fan behind the media section at Little Caesars Arena kept yelling in the first half, “They’re making their treys, and we aren’t.”

He was right. With Vassell (7 of 11) and Champagnie (5 of 8) leading the way, the Spurs connected hit 18 of their 40 attempts from beyond the arc (45%).

The Pistons, meanwhile, finished 7 of 36 from deep (19%).

It was an impressive showing by the Spurs after Detroit came into the contest ranked fifth in the league in opponents field goal percentage (34.7).
