Why this NBA head coach sees Spurs as ‘beacon of sustainability’

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson is the envy of his NBA coaching brethren.

And it’s not just because he’s guiding a young, talented team with Victor Wembanyama heading it. Detroit’s J.B. Bickerstaff and others say Johnson also has it good because he works for a patient organization that doesn’t let emotion or the opinions of others cloud its thinking.

The Spurs are, as Bickerstaff put it before the Pistons’ 114-103 loss to the Spurs on Monday night “a beacon of sustainability” and a franchise that isn’t “always just riding” emotional ups and downs.

To underscore his point, Bickerstaff pointed to the Spurs’ decision to name Johnson their coach last May after he served as acting coaching for most of last season following the stroke Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich suffered early in the 2024-25 season.

“They didn’t just throw him in there, right?” Bickerstaff said of Johnson. "He was there with their organization, with their program. They (trusted) his talent level, his ability to relate, his intelligence, his ability to lead, his ability to communicate.

"So it wasn’t just a — I hate to say — a spur-of-the-moment thing. It was something well-thought out and that helped him be better prepared for the job when he took over. He’s an extremely talented coach, great dude, great communicator, great leader.

As for Johnson, he said he’s “grateful” to be with such a supportive, patient outfit.

“It’s not like that everywhere,” said the 39-year-old coach, who has been with the Spurs since 2016.

Indeed, the Spurs’ next opponent, the Nets, are on their fourth coach, Jordi Fernández, since Kenny Atkinson’s three-plus year stint ended in March 2020 after he and the Nets mutually decided to part ways.

“I know from the top to bottom, from the whole family and Pop and (CEO) R.C. (Buford) and (general manager) Brian Wright and everyone else, we’re all trying to row in the right direction,” Johnson said. “And when you have that feeling of support, it really gives you a sense of confidence and calmness to just do your job and not be on eggshells that you’re worried about every single result or outcome. Because we know we’re working towards something bigger than every single result or outcome.”

Ingram earns G League honor

Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said the NBA honoring Harrison Ingram as its G League Player of the Week for games played Feb. 9-22 is a sign the 23-year-old Dallas native is “growing up.”

In a five-game period, the two-way contract forward averaged 22.2 points, 13.4 rebounds and 7.4 assists in 37.1 minutes, helping Austin go 4-1. He started all five games and recorded four double-doubles and one triple-double, with 16 points, 20 rebounds and 14 assists in a road game against the San Diego Clippers on Feb. 20.

The 6-foot-6 North Carolina-ex, selected by the Spurs in 2024 with the 48th overall pick, also posted a season-high 30 points on the road against the Iowa Wolves on Feb. 10.

In 28 games (25 starts) for the Austin Spurs this season, he’s averaging 16.1 points, a league-best 12.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 34.5 minutes.

“He’s been doing the right things, for sure,” Champagnie said. “He’s playing well, playing the right way, just learning how to play Spurs basketball. He’s snowing that down there. I’m super proud of him, super happy for him. When I see him, I’m going to slap him in the head, for sure.”
