San Antonio Spurs remain grounded during 10-game winning streak

TORONTO — The Spurs aren’t letting the heightened expectations due to their impressive winning streak weigh them down or change their focus, coach Mitch Johnson said.

Devin Vassell scored 21 points, De’Aaron Fox had 20, and the Spurs came from 15 points down in the third quarter to edge the Toronto Raptors 110-107 Wednesday night to hike their winning streak to 10 games.

It’s the longest current streak in the NBA and the team’s best since it won 13 in a row in 2015-16. The only other teams in the league to record double-digit win streaks this season are Oklahoma City (16) and Detroit (13) — teams the Spurs are a combined 5-1 against this season.

The Spurs (42-16) entered Thursday night’s game at Brooklyn just two games behind the Thunder in the Western Conference standings.

But even with their success, the Spurs, who have clinched their first winning season since 2018-19, which is also the last time they made the playoffs, remain focused on daily improvement rather than on talk from fans and media about capping Victor Wembanyama’s third season with a championship.

The title topic came up when a reporter asked Johnson before Wednesday’s game if the Spurs are “acknowledging that a championship could be part of their process” this season.

“No, in the sense that there’s so many things that have to go on, happen between now and then, that in my opinion, take you away from that process — if that was the discussion,” Johnson said. “That doesn’t mean you don’t have a goal to be the best team you can.”

Still, Johnson said the Spurs “haven’t tried to avoid anything” as others increase their expectations for a team with few playoff veterans.

“We haven’t tried to avoid expectations or people giving us more attention or excitement about certain outcomes,” Johnson said two days after the Spurs beat the East-leading Pistons 114-103 in Detroit. “I think we also have done a good job of not giving power to it. … We’re focused on today and having two feet on the ground and handling our business today, whatever that means based on the circumstances scheduled for that day.”

Spurs have mixed feelings about former player’s success

Former Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili has blossomed since signing with the Raptors last summer, and the Spurs are happy to see it, Johnson said.

Coming off the bench, the Georgian is averaging 22.4 minutes, 11.2 points and 4.9 rebounds, all career highs, after playing sparingly in his three seasons with the Spurs.

“We wanted Sandro to return,” Johnson said. “We thought he was growing and there was a role, and we also understood that Toronto and (Raptors coach) Darko (Rajakovic) laid out a vision for him and that vision has been true and happy for him, and it’s great to see when that fit happens for people.”

But Johnson said it’s also bittersweet when a player the coaching and developmental staffs have invested in does well elsewhere – and that it applies to both Mamukelashvili and Raptors center Jakob Poeltl, who the Spurs traded to Toronto a day before the trade deadline in 2023.

“Putting my player development hat on, you always want everybody (you are coaching) to make it, make a billion dollars and score a hundred points and be with the team for 20 years,” Johnson said. “And we’ve lost a lot of people that have been very important to our organization and people that you build relationships with and you have feelings and emotions towards, and Sandro’s one of those guys and Jakob Poeltl is one of those guys, and when they leave your organization and you see them have success, it makes you feel good.

"That’s the thing about this league that people don’t realize at times is the relationships don’t change the feelings and emotions don’t change, and so we want all those guys to be successful.”

Poeltl had 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks Wednesday night, but Mamukelashvili managed just two points, three rebounds and no assists.
