AUSTIN — Newly acquired Spurs backup center Mason Plumlee participated in shootaround Thursday morning at Moody Center, but he won’t see any action in Austin, coach Mitch Johnson said.

The Spurs announced Tuesday they had signed the 13th-year pro to a 10-day contract, filling the roster spot that opened up after they waived Jeremy Sochan last week.

Johnson was asked Wednesday after the Spurs arrived in Austin if Plumlee, who is set to turn 36 on March 5, has been cleared to play after undergoing surgery to repair a right groin issue on Dec. 31 while with Charlotte.

“He’s cleared in the sense that we have a plan in place to continue to get him ramped up to be ready to go, but he won’t be playing in Austin,” Johnson said, referring to the Spurs games against Phoenix on Thursday night and against Sacramento on Saturday night.

The Spurs officially list Plumlee as being out due to “return to competition reconditioning.”

The Spurs acquired the 7-foot, 254-pound free agent to add some muscle to their frontcourt.

“He’s been a smart veteran player on a few different teams,” Johnson said. “Think he can give us some stability defensively, good screener, high IQ connector on offense and just additional depth.”

Said forward Keldon Johnson, “He’s cool… I got to meet him earlier today. I got to play against him for some years. It’s definitely always great to have veteran presence. We’ll enjoy being around Mason and playing with Mason as the season goes on. I’m glad to have him.”

Forward Devin Vassell echoed Johnson’s comment.

“Cool guy,” Vassell said. “I’ve known of him from before, so excited to have him here, have him around. He’s good energy.”
