Mason Plumlee #22 of the Phoenix Suns battles for a rebound with Zach Collins #23 of the San Antonio Spurs and Stephon Castle #5 during the first half of the Emirates NBA Cup game at Footprint Center on December 03, 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona.

TORONTO — Mason Plumlee has plenty of experience as either an NBA starter or key rotation player.

The 13th-year pro has 480 career starts, including two earlier this season with Charlotte, and has twice enjoyed seasons in which he averaged nearly 30 minutes per game.

So what does the big man think about being part of the Spurs’ bottom-of-the-bench crew after joining the team last week?

“I think I’ve seen guys check in for five minutes and turn a game around,” he said. “That’s the way I look at it.”

Seeking to add veteran muscle to their frontcourt after waiving Jeremy Sochan, the Spurs signed the 7-foot, 254-pound native of Fort Wayne, Ind., to a 10-day deal Feb. 17. Since then, he’s been busy working out with his new teammates, mainly at shootarounds, such as the one Wednesday morning at Scotiabank Arena, while recovering from the groin surgery he had Dec. 31 with the Hornets.

The Spurs officially list him as inactive due to "return to competition reconditioning, which will also be the case for Thursday night’s game at Brooklyn.

“I’m doing great, body feels great,” said Plumlee, who turns 36 on March 5. “I’m taking my time coming back, but I feel really healthy.”

The Spurs are expected to sign him to another 10-day deal after this one expires, viewing him as an emergency center whose playoff experience (71 career games) could help in the postseason should they eventually sign him for the rest of the season.

“They’ve been great and we talked through it before signing,” Plumlee said of his slow ramp-up to being active. “They’re helping me get to a playing condition to where I can go out and help when called upon.”

Plumlee became a free agent after Oklahoma City waived him Feb. 4, the same day the Hornets traded him to the Thunder. His agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, negotiated a deal with the Spurs, which thrilled Plumlee,

Plumlee appeared in just 14 games for the Hornets, starting two and averaging just under nine minutes per game. He played in 74 games last season for Phoenix, averaging 4.5 points and 6.1 rebounds.

“When I came into the league (as a late-first round pick in 2013),” Plumlee said, "the Spurs had all the guys that were winning championships, and I just remember them being so sharp in everything they did on the court, and you hear about how well it’s run behind the scenes and everybody gets hired (to become head coaches) out of here. So you kind of know coming in that there’s something that works, there’s something unique.

“And then with the guys they have now, playing against them, I just thought it was a really talented roster. Really good young players and some veterans who have been there and done that, so it was an exciting opportunity to be able to sign here.”

Plumlee said there’s “no ceiling” for the Victor Wembanyama-led team, which entered Wednesday night’s game against Toronto 41-16 and on a nine-game winning streak.

“At each position, they’re deep, young and talented,” Plumlee said. “This team can be as good as it wants to be.”

Adding to the Duke product’s comfort level with the Spurs: He’s known forward Harrison Barnes since they were high school stars and he worked with assistant coach Sean Sweeney at stops in Brooklyn and Detroit.

He’s also a fan of coach Mitch Johnson.

“Mitch has been great,” Plumlee said. “I got to watch him play in college (at Stanford) and always had a high level of respect for him as a player, and now to get to play for him is cool.”
