Spurs replace Jeremy Sochan with journeyman big man Mason Plumlee

San Antonio Spurs center Bismack Biyombo (18) and Phoenix Suns center Mason Plumlee (22) reach for a rebound during the second half of an NBA basketball game in Austin, Texas, Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025.
Seeking to add some beef to their frontcourt, the Spurs announced Tuesday night the signing of free agent center Mason Plumlee to a 10-day contract.
Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Plumlee, who is set to turn 36 on March 5, will fill the roster spot that opened up after the Spurs waived forward Jeremy Sochan last Wednesday. With 18 players, the roster is now at full capacity as the Spurs prepare to resume play after the All-Star break with two “home” games in Austin, beginning with Thursday night’s contest against Phoenix.
Plumlee, 7-foot, 254 pounds, played sparingly with Charlotte this season after signing with the Hornets as a free agent in July. The 13th-year pro averaged 1.6 points and 8.8 minutes per game in 14 appearances before undergoing surgery on Dec. 31 to address a right groin injury.
He hasn’t played since recording five points and five rebounds in a loss at Cleveland on Dec. 22.
The Hornets traded Plumlee to Oklahoma City for Ousmane Dieng and a 2029 second-round draft pick on Feb. 4, but the Thunder waived him that same day.
Brooklyn made Plumlee the 22nd overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He entered this season with career averages of 8.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 21.9 minutes per game across 860 appearances. He’s played for seven teams in his career, including two stints with the Hornets.
A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Plumlee played high school ball in Indiana and North Carolina before playing four seasons at Duke.
Plumlee will wear No. 45.
Phoenix missing Wembanyama nemisis
The Suns will be without forward Dillon Brooks when they face the Spurs on Thursday night at Moody Center in Austin.
Brooks will be serving a one-game, league-imposed suspension without pay after receiving his 16th technical foul of the season. It’s a break for the Spurs because the hard-nosed 6-foot-7, 225-pound ninth-year pro has had success in the past defending Spurs All-Star center Victor Wembanyama.
In a recent interview with streamer N3on on Twitch, Brooks bragged about having the 7-foot-4 Frenchman’s “number.”
“He knows it too,” Brooks said. "That’s the one guy in the NBA, I have his number. Everybody now is taking that blueprint of guarding him. You never guard him with a big. Or else, you’ll see how he’s going to torch.
“So, you never guard him with a big, or he will see it like at the beginning of the year, like he torched Dallas up, he torched Anthony Davis. You’re going to have to put a guard on him and crawl all up in his space. Guard him like tight, the whole time, and not let him serve dribbles and keep him away from the rim."
Brooks received his most recent technical foul with 6:37 left in the first half of the Suns’ 136-109 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Feb. 11.
Under NBA rules, a player or coach is automatically suspended without pay for one game once he receives his 16th technical foul during a regular season. For every two additional technical fouls received during that regular season, the player or coach will be automatically suspended without pay for an additional game.
